A creditor gave me a check to pay a third party.....then issued a "stop payment"

Based on the limited information you've given, it doesn't sound like you have any liability on the check. If it wasn't made out to you and you did not endorse the check then, unless you have contractual obligations to the third party, it is unlikely you are liable under the check. Of course the answer depends on all the facts and circumstances. I recommend speaking with an attorney who can determine whether you are liable once all the pertinent questions are answered.
