Involved in a Hit And Run with no collision coverage. Can I go after at fault party for damages?

In a hit and run from a driver who ran a red light causing significant damage to my car. They immediately fled scene but I was able to get their plate info. I didn’t have collision coverage so my insurance didn’t cover me in this event but mentions a mini torp and small claims court. Lesson learned. Police office refuses to give vehicle owner’s info due to the possibility of them not being the actual driver!?- which I need in-order to file in small claims court. What are my options to carry out compensation for the damages to my vehicle???

You should have been given a card with the police report number on it and should be able to obtain the police report with that information. Hopefully, the insurance info for the hit and run driver will be there and you can contact that company to discuss the mini-tort coverage, which has a $3,000 cap. Often people flee the scene of an accident because they have no insurance, but still worth a try. If you were injured and if you have insurance (even with no collision coverage) you are entitled to Michigan No Fault benefits and may also have a claim for your pain and suffering.

Obtain the police report. The infomation should be disclosed. If the person fled that's not a good sign. Probably no insurance either. You can also contact DMV to see who owns the car.
