Can I sue alterations for messing up a prom dress?

The dress was $500 and the woman cut the dress too short, then said she could "fix" it by letting the dress out. Letting it out caused t to rip down the side at the seams. She claims she can fix this and refused to give us a refund. Can I sue her even if she "fixes" it since it still has the chance of ripping and has been completely devalued?
