Hello, can anyone tell me please if it would be illegal for DJ's or the average music enthusiast to post mixes on Youtube? When I say "mixes" I mean like a mix of different songs.
The way I am seeing it is this is not for any commercial benefit and ad free, you post a mix of music you own for people to enjoy, not download, who is losing here? Certainly not the artists, if anything you are helping them by popularizing their tunes, not so? Thanks.
Copyright laws to come into play. One can be sued if one does not have permission or pay the proper fee
Probably best to discuss with an entertainment and/or copyright attorney.

YouTube postings are subject to commercial benefits. You also would have copyright issues.
I think your analysis is totally incorrect. While the artist is getting additional exposure, they are not getting royalties which is how they earn their living. When a song is played on the radio there is a royalty payment, so why should this be any different?
The owners of the copyrights to the songs and the sound recordings have the exclusive rights to distribute them. Your use would not constitute fair use, and you would therefore have to get a written license from the copyright owners. Creating your own mix of these recordings and distributing them without written permission would constitute violation of the owner's copyrights in the recordings.

Copyright liability does not depend on whether someone is losing. And indeed, artists do lose when their work is used in this way. Artists have the right to control how their songs are used (except for covers), and where and how they are distributed. If you use a song without permission of the artist (or his publisher or record label) you are diluting valuable rights. This is illegal---and potentially even criminal.
