Alex was born into a military family and went to the University of Washington where he studied marketing and entrepreneurship. He later went to the University of Oregon Law School, where he was President of the local chapter of the American Constitution Society and a charter member of the Oregon Innocence Project.  While still in law school, he worked for the Lane County District Attorney's Office in Eugene, Oregon as a law clerk, where he prosecuted cases including DUI and drug possession.
