Practice areas

I have thoroughly enjoyed the study and practice of maritime law.  I have studied maritime law in the United States and in the United Kingdom.  It has many features and principles that are unique and counterintuitive.  Cases that I have litigated and/or argued at the appellate level have been favorably cited in 42 other reported cases.  Choosing the best venue is part of the litigation process:  Alaska vs. Washington, state vs. federal, and in some cases, tribal court.   I am also a member of the Makah Tribal Court bar in Neah Bay, Washington.

Excellent Attorney
Shane was recommended to us by a Vancouver Canada, Admiralty Law firm to handle a boat fire case in Seattle, Washington. He did so with great success. His local knowledge and experience were valuable assets, his communication with us was excellent, he worked hard and he kept his costs down. Shane provided very professional yet personalized service that yielded results.

Very attentive and respectful!
I phoned Shane with a legal matter that was, frankly, 'small potatoes' in the grand scheme of things. He listened to everything I had to say, for as long as it took me to say it, and returned it as a thoughtful and actionable legal opinion. He was extremely helpful!

Professional Negligence
I consulted Mr. Carew regarding the question of professional negligence of a provider involved in the sale of a yacht. I had no idea what information I would need in order to consider proceeding with a lawsuit. Mr. Carew took his time, gave me his genuine interest and his competent knowledge in telling me the options and pitfalls to keep in mind as well as what the next steps could be. At the end of the consultation I had a clear understanding of my next steps and the general structure of legal recourse.

Helpful and Focused
I hired Shane on behalf of a Juneau, Alaska, non-profit to assist with a complicated Washington consumer protection issue. His knowledge, experience, and insight were invaluable, and resulting in the client obtaining virtually all funds requested. I would definitely hire Shane again. He is ethical, focused, and a pleasure to work with.

Outstanding Lawyer
Very well versed in the subject matter associated with my case. Worked well interfacing with opposing counsel. Did an excellent job keeping me informed of the process, what the next step to expect, and answering my questions in language I could understand. Worked very hard and diligently to represent my interests and obtain a fair and just settlement. Exhibited high qualities of integrity.

Excellent Lawyer
I felt that Shane broke the lawyer stereotypes: he was honest, candid, and worked to help me even after it seemed financially lucrative for him to do so. He helped me obtain a settlement for unpaid wages from a fishing operation. He had good advice, was very realistic and forthcoming, and ultimately I can sleep a little better at night knowing the system (and good people like Shane) can make the right thing happen.

Knowledgeable and helpful
I called Mr. Carew regarding our company's case involving debt. He was incredibly helpful. He ended up giving advice on how we should pursue this case, and even pointed out some practical issues I would highly recommend him for his knowledge and willingness to help.

Excellent experience all around
Mr. Carew assisted me with an employment law dispute over the last 2 months. Throughout the process I was kept informed of updates and always felt I was up to date on my case. His candor was especially reassuring.

Very Helpful
Very Informative and Compassionate, worked with me well and very organized. He did some pro-bono work even though he does not take my type of cases. He did his best to do right by me and help find an attorney in my area. I would recommend him, especially for his knowledge.

The best maritime lawyer
I was a client of Shane's . He helped me regarding a maritime lien. He did not charge me but helped me so I could do it on my own. He was gracious and generous

Confident and Caring - Highly Recommended
I had the opportunity to deal wish Shane over a billing matter. Shane was responsive, knowledgeable, and understanding. His knowledge of debt law was impressive and helped out immensely. I did not feel like just another client but a friend.

Years of ethical and knowledgeable service
I retained Mr. Carew as my maritime attorney in 1992 based upon the recommendation of another maritime attorney, Dwight Guy. Mr. Guy had represented me for several years, but because of a potential conflict-of-interest he felt I needed a new attorney. Mr. Carew primarily represented me in fishing rights issues, as well corporation/incorporation issues. He always emphasized that he could represent me only in an ethical and honest manner, with the goal of settling issues according to the law. I always felt that he was fair and honest in his billing and he never tried unfairly increase billable hours. Although I now longer an active fisherman, I still am part owner of three boats that fish in Alaska and Mr. Carew is still my attorney for boat and fishing related matters. I have recommended him to several other fishermen and they have always indicated that he gave them good service as well.
