Jeffrey L Smoot

About me

A friend called me "A Northwest Kind of Lawyer," and I like that. My legal career started as a weekend receptionist at a Seattle law firm, a part-time job while I attended college. From there, I advanced over many years to become a law librarian, billing clerk, word processor, legal secretary, paralegal, associate, solo practitioner and partner. I have focused my practice on representing individuals and business clients in a variety of matters including debtor-creditor rights, bankruptcy, receivership, foreclosure, business and real estate, estate planning and probate, and related transactions and litigation. I have more than 25 years of law firm experience, including 18 years as a litigation, bankruptcy and family law paralegal prior to becoming an attorney. I am a regular speaker at legal education seminars, and have been recognized as a "Rising Star" by SuperLawyers in 2010 and 2016. I enjoy helping individuals and business owners find common sense, cost-effective solutions for avoiding and recovering from financial distress. Outside the office, I enjoy hiking, alpine scrambling, bouldering, rock climbing, kayaking, playing baseball, writing, taking photographs, playing music, and going on road trips throughout the Western U.S. I have written several hiking and climbing guide books, a few of which might still be found on the shelves at REI, and was formerly a correspondent to several outdoor magazines including Climbing, Rock & Ice, and Outside. I previously served as Chair of the WSBA Law Clerk Board (2009-2015), and currently serve as a board member of Seattle Select Attorneys Association and as a member of the Camp Long Advisory Council supporting outdoor education and opportunities for disadvantaged and underserved youth in Southwest Seattle. I am the founder and chief organizer of Camp Long Mountain Fest, an annual celebration of Seattle's vibrant climbing history and outdoor community.
