Rex B. Stratton has over 35 years of experience in business law and management, litigation, corporate finance and secured transactions. He has an extensive background in both litigation and transactional matters involving patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secrets. Mr. Stratton has substantial experience and offers to clients a thorough knowledge of legal and business factors that affect or influence their day-to-day business decisions. As an experienced litigator, he is able to analyze and advise clients on the risks that may arise from a business decision or take into consideration elements of a contract or license that could become the subject of future disputes. His broad background and experience also enable him in understanding disputed issues and mediating or arbitrating matters as a neutral.
Mr. Stratton has represented both U.S. and foreign clients in business transactions and litigation matters. He has experience in representing U.S. companies in dealing with foreign entities as well foreign entities doing business in the United States.
Mr. Stratton received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Montana, where he was an associate editor of the Montana Law Review. Upon graduation, he had the honor of serving as a law clerk to the Honorable William J. Jameson -- one of the foremost federal jurists in the United States. Mr. Stratton holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wabash College, with a double major in Economics and Political Science.
Mr. Stratton completed the six day, intensive study course in Mediating the Litigated Case at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, Pepperdine University. He has mediated and participated in numerous mediations. He is also a panel member of the Western District of Washington Rule 39.1 list of neutrals qualified for mediation under the Local Rules.
Mr. Stratton is an active member of the Washington State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). Mr. Stratton served as Secretary of and a member of the Board of Directors of the AIPLA and is currently Chair of the AIPLA’s Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution. He is also an AIPLA Fellow and a member of the Amicus Committee of the AIPLA.
Mr. Stratton was a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Intellectual Property Law Education Foundation (AIPLEF) from 2000 to 2008. He is a past-president of the Washington State Patent Law Association (WSPLA) and a former Trustee of the National Counsel of Intellectual Property Law Associations.
During his legal career, Mr. Stratton has written numerous articles for the Washington State and Seattle-King County Bar Associations, the Federal Bar Association and the American Intellectual Property Law Association. Mr. Stratton has taught numerous CLE programs for the AIPLA, the WSPLA, the Washington State Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association, including programs on Alternative Dispute Resolution practice. Mr. Stratton created and chaired a five day program, Litigating in the Digital Decade for the 2004 AIPLA Mid-Winter Institute.
Mr. Stratton was the Centennial President of the Vashon Island Rotary Club and currently serves as a Trustee of both the Vashon Island Rotary Foundation and Vashon College. He is a member of the Vashon Island Fire & Rescue as Volunteer Fire Support and President of the Vashon-Maury Island Firefighter’s Association.
