About me

State Bar Certified Specialist in immigration law for over 20 years -- the only certified specialist presently practicing in Davis, CA.  California Super Lawyer for many years.  I have no clue how AVVO does its ratings, other than they have solicited me for years to "pay to play" and I have refused.  There are some really good lawyers rated "5 stars" by AVVO and some really BAD lawyers rated 4-5 stars by AVVO.  Suggest you check out State Bar certified specialists and peer vetted Super Lawyers before deciding who to hire for your immigration case.  Ask other certified specialists and other Super Lawyers who they would recommend in the area.

I have been practicing immigration law for over 29 years -- including for nonprofits, in private practice, teaching law school and paralegal courses and advising University scholars.  I supervised the immigration clinic at McGeorge Law School, as well as taught the immigration law course there. I also served on and chaired the California State Bar's Immigration and Nationality Law Advisory Commission for over four years, developing and grading the immigration law specialization exam for California certified specialists, as well as reviewing each application for certification as a specialist in immigration law.  For the past several years I have been an "Attorney of the Day" for the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, mentoring and answering immigration law related questions for attorneys and nonprofit accredited representatives nationwide on a weekly basis.  I have also updated and edited immigration law treatises and manuals, including the National Lawyers' Guild/National Immigration Project treatise "Immigration Law and Crimes," ILRC's "Defending Immigrants in the Ninth Circuit," "Naturalization and U.S. Citizenship," "A Guide for Immigration Advocates," "Inadmissibility & Deportability," the "VAWA Manual" and others.  I have contributed articles and spoken on conference panels and in webinars for the American Immigration Lawyers' Association.  I take selected private cases -- as my schedule permits.  My focus is on family immigration, adjustment of status to permanent residency, consular processing, naturalization/citizenship, removal defense for LPRs (including LPRs convicted of certain crimes), advising clients and their criminal defense attorneys of the immigration consequences of plea bargains, VAWA, "U" visas, and selected employment related cases.
