Apparently consumers use this site to evaluate attorneys and if you are such a consumer I hope you are not too busy to read this. First I would caution consumers about these AVVO ratings, which make no sense. I have seen first year attorneys get ratings just shy of a perfect 10. In fact after writing this, my rating went up almost a full point. I know of more than one attorney that has a perfect 10 rating that I would never hire. Similarly I have seen one exceptionally gifted attorney with a very mediocre rating and warning from AVVO. If you came to me and I had to refer the case, I would refer it to this attorney that AVVO conisders a risky attorney. I know there is a biased against attorneys, but we are just people. There are types of attorneys with all types of personalities, ethics, and moral values. Like everyone else with a self serving opinion, I like to think that I am a good human being. When you are considering hiring an attorney take advantage of free consultations. You will get a good feel of the attorney with the initial consultation. The critical questions, you should ask are (1) years of experience handling personal injury; (2) jury trial experience; (3) willingness to take your case to trial; (4) and case load. Gray hair, or lack of hair does not mean experience, it just means they have gray hair or are balding. Personal injury attorneys have to have jury trial experience, at least 1 jury trial, otherwise you will not get the best result. A lot of attorneys do take cases to trial, but will not take soft tissue injury cases to trial. Whiplash injury cases are expensive to take to trial, and attorneys lose money in these cases. The reason the attorney needs to take these cases to trial is to insure the best result for the client and future clients. Some firms are mills, where they handle a lot of cases and the client never gets to talk to the attorney. I have been handling personal injury and wrongful death my entire career. I have tried cases and I prepare all cases for trial. I am picky about what cases I take, if the case should go to small claims or if the consumer can best handle the case, I will tell them so. When you call me, don't be surprised if I tell you that it is better if you handle the case yourself or encourage you to go to small claims. I reject more than half of all cases, because I have to feel the client will benefit from hiring me, and half the time they will not.
