When I travelled to Mexico on cruise, I have I-797 approved until 2020 March but I have Visa on my Passport until October 2018. when you travel out of country with extended I-797 they have to update the I-94 to be in sync with I-797. He was top of on it and provided me couple of solutions where I can go to US Immigration & Customs Enforcement which is close to my home or send email to i94lax@cbp.dhs.gov where my port of entry comes under with list to documents. I chose the second option and email CBP with all required documents. Officer just took one day to update and next day I could see the updated as per current I-797.
