Steven M. Rubin dedicates his career to promoting the rights of individuals in the workplace. Many of his cases involve FMLA, medical disability leave, and pregnancy leave and discrimination. He regularly litigates sexual harassment cases, often with early and beneficial results. Age, race, and ethnicity harassment and discrimination cases make up a significant part of his practice. He recently brought a defamation and interference with prospective economic case to verdict in Los Angeles Superior Court. He has successfully handled hundreds of severance negotiations, and regularly litigates cases into substantial cash award settlements for his clients, often early enough in the process so that the benefits are enjoyed without the uncertainty and anxiety that accompanies years of trial and appellate litigation. He handles arbitrations under a variety of providers such as AAA, ADR, and Jams; and has wide experience with mediation and creative approaches to alternate dispute resolution. Above all, he has shown a special aptitude for creatively and effectively bringing employers to the table to engage in the early negotiation of disputes. His firm's practice includes representation of corporate executives and managers from all industries, highly compensated professionals, as well as victims of sexual harassment, disability discrimination, workplace violence, and other wrongs and discrimination in the workplace. The firm has successfully resolved all matter of sexual misconduct cases, violence and harassment cases, often through confidential pre-trial negotiations. It represents employees in many different industries in wage and hour cases, most notably misclassification cases involving large groups of employees claiming unpaid overtime, breaks and lunch hours. The firm regularly represents individuals in disability discrimination cases involving failure to accommodate issues, wrongful termination, retaliation and other related claims. In California, the disability discrimination provisions are broad, so that people with heart conditions, bad backs, cancer, lupus, diverticulitis and a mutlitude of other conditions who take medical leaves or need other accommodations are frequently covered. The disability cases often involve FMLA/CFRA claims as well. The firm often and early engages the services of expert economists, forensic psychologists, and private investigators in order to establish liability through witnesses and document medical and psychological damages.
Mr. Rubin graduated from the University of Southern California Law School in 1979, where he served as a member of the Law Review. Prior to that, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island . Before starting his own civil litigation practice, he was involved in international and environmental law in Washington, D.C. where he practiced for many years. He is an active member of the California Employment Lawyer's Association; the National Employment Law Association; the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Bar. He practices widely in State and federal courts in all areas of employment law.
