I see myself as a lawyer to ordinary people. Oddly, this has become the exception to the rule. Most legal services target the socioeconomic extremes—the deep-pocketed corporate interests and the indigent—leaving a sizeable, overlooked gap in the middle. I am your neighborhood lawyer. For ten years, I have lived in Los Feliz; my daughter goes to Franklin Elementary; and I am a member of the Los Feliz Neighborhood Council.
Contrary to what many believe, most areas of the law are not that hard to master. Although a comparison is sometimes made, the law is not like medicine. Most lawyers are generalists. Much of what passes as legal specialization is in fact an excuse for excessive fees. While certified specialists have become common in some practice areas, you should consider that the judges who will decide your case routinely hop from area to area. While repetition certainly helps lazy practitioners avoid mistakes, an intelligent, diligent, and zealous advocate is doubtless better. Moreover, specialist practices are often “mills” in which the most of the work is done by a paralegal or secretary.
By contrast, I make the following promises to every client:
1. I will personally handle your case.
2. I will keep you informed of my progress.
3. I will return phone calls within 24-hours.
4. I will always give you my honest assessment whether it is good news or bad news.
5. I will zealously advocate on your behalf, but this will not become an excuse for wasteful expense.
6. My fees will be reasonable and transparent.
7. If your case requires it (and you can afford it), I will hand you off to the top expert in the field.
