Marlo Van Oorschot is a respected Los Angeles-based family law attorney who has helped hundreds of clients to resolve divorce, child custody, child and spousal support and property disputes. As the founding and managing partner of Van Oorschot Law Group, PC, she approaches each client’s legal concern in the spirit of a process that she has trademarked as “Strategy. Guidance. Teamwork.™”  Using these concepts in her counseling Ms. Van Oorschot assesses the unique needs of all her clients, working with them as a trusted partner at every step in the divorce proceeding.

A growing area of emphasis for Ms. Van Oorschot’s practice is helping individuals over the age of 50 deal with the realities of a divorce proceeding. In her family law practice she is sensitive to the issues facing the older divorcing couple, ranging from retirement and insurance concerns to potential re-entry into the workforce, and has made a major commitment to educate this generational group about the complexities they face in divorce.

Ms. Van Oorschot’s book, How To Survive Grey Divorce, has been praised for raising awareness of the complexities in a divorce after age 50 and presenting ideas about how to minimize the financial impact of these complexities for the benefit of both spouses. Her writings on grey divorce have appeared in the Los Angeles Daily Journal and LA Family Magazine, and she has appeared on KCAL9 News to discuss grey divorce concerns.  Ms. Van Oorschot has also written for the American Bar Association’s GPSolo magazine, and she speaks and blogs widely on family law issues.

In resolving family law disputes, Ms. Van Oorschot enhances her litigation skills through effective use of mediation and other alternative dispute resolution processes.  She has completed 40 hours of basic family law mediation training through Mosten Mediation’s Divorce Mediation Training and has also completed 20 hours of advanced family law mediation training from Mosten Mediation.  In addition, Ms. Van Oorschot served on the Los Angeles Superior Court Family Law Mediation Panel.

Ms. Van Oorschot graduated Cum Laude from California Polytechnic University, Pomona in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a major in Finance, Real Estate and Law. From 1989 – 1991 she worked as a Financial Analyst for a security protection company in Culver City, California.

After obtaining her law license and entering practice in 1994, Ms. Van Oorschot continued working for Robert K. Holmes as a family lawyer, limiting her practice exclusively to family law.  While working for Robert K. Holmes she had the opportunity to be an adjunct professor for a semester at La Verne University School of Law teaching Community Property.

In October, 2001 Ms. Van Oorschot opened her own office focusing on family law and continues to limit her practice to family law matters.

Ms. Van Oorschot is a member of the Beverly Hills Bar Association (Family Law Section) and Los Angeles County Bar Association (Family Law section).

Incredible Lawyer! Incredible results
I was represented better than I could have ever imagined. My case was a very difficult which included custody, divorce and other complexities. Marlo and Cara treated me as a friend rather than an open checkbook. My opinions were valued and my doubts were always reassured. Marlo and Cara were always available and intimately familiar with the details of my case. They fought hard for what is right against one of the most unreasonable and incompetent attorneys I have come across. They were understanding, compassionate and aggressive when they needed to be. The was a perfect strategy to ensure a great outcome. I couldn't have asked for a better law firm or attorney.

Good work done by a good person.
Marlo helped guide me thru a highly complicated divorce case. She was both polite and professional and I felt she really cared about me and my situation. I highly respect Marlo and am glad I chose her to represent me. I received 5 Star service from a 5 Star ethical person.

Impeccable, smart, compassionate and aggressive
Cara was absolutely phenomenal. I spent a year and half in court ensconced in a deep custody battle that was tumultuous. We had several court hearings and a PPA2 prior to our final judgment. I was awarded full custody of our daughter. Less than one year later, my ex-husband filed an RFO for a modification to the visitation schedule and a request to lower his support payments. Cara took the time of her own accord to review the files and paperwork as well as research the current situation in depth. She had a keen understanding of narcissism and how it plays out in the court systems, especially as it relates to custody dynamics and was realistic, thorough and succinct in all communications with me prior to our hearing, as well as caring as to what was in the best interest always for our daughter. This type of care is not found often and especially when it's matched with an aggressive and intelligent attorney. She guided me in the correct ways and requested all appropriate evidence required to establish, without a shadow of doubt, our position. Her declarations were thoughtful, clear, well written and backed by a solid understanding of the legal system, my particular case and how to support our daughters best interest. She was compassionate and succinct in her communication with me, considering costs and not taking advantage of her time and my money. She was exceptionally prepared the day of court and exemplified a superb handle of the case in support of matter. The entire case was dismissed by the judge and our current judgement remains. After the hearing, she prepared the OAH quickly, efficiently and took the time to make sure I had the correct information and contact details to make arrangements with CSSD, and move forward with managing the follow through in my ex-husbands obligations to the judgement. I would highly recommend her and this firm, especially as it relates to family law. I feel very grateful I was referred to her and would use this firm again, without a second thought, should further proceedings arise. Their rates are competitive and fair and they provided service far and beyond what others do, in my experience. Highly, highly recommend!

Amazing Attorney
Marlo helped me to end my alimony 20 months early. I wanted to pay my spouse a lump sum, and keep my tax deductions per annum. Marlo, researched tax consequences (which is above and beyond her scope) and really made this fast & easy.

Great Family Law Attorney
Marlo is a great attorney who specialized in family law. She is very professional, efficient, and result oriented. No matter you need simply a couple of sessions of legal consultation or to retain someone to solve your case, she is the one to go! I have done both and all I can say is that I am definitely happy for the work and result I paid for.

Nobody Did It Better
After a difficult and protracted divorce and having had to change representation three times, I happened to hear Marlo speak on the subject of Late Divorce at a Bar Association meeting. She made such a knowledgeable and important presentation on "my" experience, I sought her counsel when I was served with another in a series post-divorce actions brought against me to erode the terms of my original Judgement of Divorce, as well as my will and my finances. Marlo was smart and strong, while being attentive and respectful to my voice. The truth is, none of my other attorneys educated me or heard me the way Marlo did. With absolute integrity, she got to the grit of my needs; she quickly, and efficiently stood strong against opposing counsel; and she brought a total and complete resolution to my seemingly never-ending embroilment in post-divorce grief. Her office is convenient and inviting. Her staff is attentive, personable and smart. But, most importantly, Marlo freed me. I cannot begin to properly express my admiration, respect and gratitude for her ability. . Had I known "then" what I know now, she should have and would have been with me when all of this started. She is an excellent attorney!

Marlo is an excellent attorney
Marlo was incredibly helpful as she helped me through my divorce. She offered professional and solid advice, great resources and an empathetic ear as she help me through a very challenging experience. She offered support and ensured that my children and i were protected at the time of the divorce and for many years into the future. She not only supported my needs at the time of the divorce but has been as my side offering wise counsel for the past ten years. Marlo is honest, smart and knows what she is doing. I am forever grateful for everything she has done for me and my family.

Very Smart & Helpful
I would recommend Marlo any day. Not only did she fight for me, but she was very honest and upfront about what my expectations should be. She helped me with every facet of my divorce from the custody and child support, to the complicated dividing of assets and even a restraining order.

Great divorce attorney
As many others before me and unfortunately more being added as we speak, getting divorced was a life changing experience for me. Marlo is a straight shooter, methodical, honest, proficient with the law, and effective communicator. I am sure I forget some additional important traits that I probably forget. Marlo and her staff use latest technology, turn around things efficiently, and represent your rights to achieve best arrangement. We obtained great custody and child support settlement, and now, 10 years later, I will be using Marlo to modify the terms and further reduce my child support. Bottom line - highly recommended!

You can't do it on your own.
I don't think anyone enjoys having to deal with divorce, the process that is common to divorce, and the cost associated with it. The only good part of my divorce was having Marlo on my side. She knew exactly what was going on (my ex changed attorneys after a year so she had two different sets of attorneys for my 2 1/2 year ordeal) and that gave me the ability to focus on what I needed to do. We had regular strategy discussions as needed with the goal of resolving the case as effectively as possible. Marlo is only one side of the case, however, so the more difficult opposing counsel is, the more you need someone level headed and experienced like Marlo to get the job done fairly. In my experience a number of the divorce attorneys I saw were sharks or tall tale tellers. Marlo was professional, to the point and was also well known in the courtroom as well. (in a positive way) Whenever I asked any legal question, process questions, likely outcome questions at all she had the answer for me directly. She was able to share her experience and offer a most likely outcome so that I could decide if I should fight an issue or not based on her input. In the end, the settlement was essentially what we offered in the first place, it just took my ex that long to realize the promises she was being given by her attorneys were not realistic. My costs were also about 1/2 of hers. I would highly recommend Marlo to any unfortunate soul who is facing divorce. You will be well taken care of and represented. I wish I could say the process is fair and simple, but that just isn't the case so you need to have someone like Marlo on your side.

Family Law Expert
Marlo is extremely knowledgeable. She is pragmatic, professional and results-oriented. Unlike other Family Law attorneys I have worked with, however, Marlo is focused on getting results for her client(s) (as opposed to "playing the game" with opposing counsel in a way that drives up legal expenses. Marlo is also empathetic and personable. I would hire her again in a heartbeat, and heartily recommend her to anyone in need of a great Family Law attorney.

Divorce
Marlo and her team went above and beyond to help me through the divorce process. Needless to say I was devastated and confused but she had my back through it all. The care and comfort were wonderful; her acuity was remarkable and I am so happy I chose to have Marlo and her firm represent me.

Very Pleased.
I hired Marlo because of her vast experience as a Divorce lawyer and as a mediator. She sees the big picture and gave me incredibly good advice, especially when I was at my most emotional--which a divorce can make you. She is exceedingly smart and laid out a great game plan, that turned out to be the right one. Spent a lot of time personally with me to get the nuances of the case as I saw it. I could not recommend her or the very nice people at her firm, highly enough.

Review Marlo Van Oorschot
I was very pleased with my entire divorce process with Marlo Van Oorschot. Divorce is never easy and it gets more complicated with the emotional aspect of children. I was very happy with Marlo's knowledge and experience of divorce proceedings,as well, she understood the importance of compassion. My settlement gave me the time with my children I wanted. I would recommend Marlo to anyone who whats to look at all options available on the table to get a fair and reasonable settlement.

Simply the best!
Marlo handled my divorce with skill, compassion, and wisdom. She peeled me off the ceiling regularly when things got difficult, and helped me make reasoned, rational decisions throughout the process. If Marlo agrees to handle your case, you will be well-served!

Not Respected by Opposing Counsel
Marlo was very nice and she had many years in the field which drew me in. She was referred by a friend who was going through an amicable separation. In that situation, she might have been okay. For my situation, it didn't seem like opposing counsel respected her at all. She couldn't get any answers and we always seemed to defer to their proposals instead of having a strategy of our own. When I finally pushed to find out what our plan was, she lost her temper with me and we parted ways. Divorce is an emotional thing. Marlo chose to be emotional as well, when she should have been my line of defense. I wouldn't select her unless you had an easy case and just need someone to administer the paperwork.
