About me

I protect assets and generate revenue for clients through tools that include stategic patent prosecution, information governance, security advising and privacy practices.  My clients include Fortune 500 companies, mid-size companies, startups and inventors.  I have extensive experience in cloud computing, database, embedded system, web application, mobile application and medical device technologies.  I've coded in Java, C#, C, C++, Ruby on Rails, PHP and a few other languages.  My dual degrees from both computer science and electrical engineering departments give me insight from silicon to cloud computing, and the underlying software and hardware.  I'd enjoy talking with you to discover how we can leverage your ideas, inventions and business practices to help you be successful in the marketplace.

Besides the front-line legal work, you will often find me behind the scenes doing the technical work.  I've run the tech table at Utah Genius, coded the Utah Genius and Bateman IP Law Group websites, performed the SEO on various websites, added XML product feeds to, fixed Nintendo DS systems and generally help friends and family keep their e-commerce stores open, product feeds connected, websites up, devices operating and computers working.

I believe in leaving things better than I find it.  I volunteer in Junior Achievement teaching business to elementary aged kids, as a Webelos Leader in Cub Scouts teaching life skills to 10-year olds, as a girls soccer coach teaching teamwork and out-thinking the other team, outside "general counsel" for the HHT Foundation, helping underemployed lawyers polish their resumes and try to serve wherever I am needed.

Most of all, however, I enjoy being a dad.

  • Randall B. Bateman

Ben is one of those rare lawyers who actually understands the business implications of his work as well as the legal implications. This makes him a valued asset to any client he represents. Moreover, Ben is remarkably up to date on trends regarding software and the internet and is able to help his clients proactively anticipate legal needs that are likely to develop, rather than simply reacting to what is happening today.
