Wish I would have called Kurt sooner! Exceeded Expectations!
I am compelled to rate/review Kurt for 2 reasons--1st - to show my gratitude. 2nd - To offer advice to anyone who's "on the fence" about hiring an attorney vs. go in alone. Kurt was able to accomplish in a matter of weeks what others could not accomplish in years. I am not an expert in "the system" however I think the difference between Kurt and the others is that he has access to, and relationships with those that make "the process" actually work in all of northern UT. If cost is holding you back, do the math factoring in what it will cost if you don't get the best-case outcome---monetarily and quality of life being measured. Also, Kurt's team is awesome. Sherri gets things done! I fully endorse and recommend Kurt and his team.

Highly Recommend
I highly recommend Kurt Helgesen as an attorney that understands the law and fights hard for his client. Our son found himself in an unfortunate situation where he made a stupid mistake and needed representation. As a parent you always want the best for your kids even when they screw up and hiring Kurt was the best thing we could have done. Kurt was very knowledgeable about my sons rights and knew the process well enough that he carefully navigated him to a very successful deal with the prosecutor. We could not have been more pleased with his service, communication and knowledge of the law. We would use him again if needed.

Knowledgeable, prepared and thorough!
Kurt has been an exceptional attorney for me throughout several cases and is exceptionally prepared and ahead of each curve, especially with high conflict divorce. He was always available and explained each option and scenario and executed my wishes swiftly and accurately. He got results without wasting my time and is very sympathetic to difficult situations. I'm very grateful for Kurt and his dedicated, honest work on my cases. I highly recommend Kurt for any legal troubles or issues, he goes above and beyond.

Kurt Helgesen
I hired Kurt to help me with a custody dispute. He was well prepared and was always one step ahead of the other lawyer. He prepared me for the best or worst that could happen. Made my court dates so much easier! I was very impressed with my lawyer. Would recommend him to anyone.

Went above and beyond my expectations!
I could not have picked a better lawyer for my traffic case. While traveling through Utah, I got a speeding ticket and an expired registration ticket. Not only did I miss my court date, I lost my temper one day and sent a very insulting, offensive email to the court. Kurt worked his magic for a very reasonable fee and reduced my case to just the speeding ticket. I am still doing cartwheels for joy. Great lawyer, would recommend him to anyone.

Amazing, and very knowledgeable!
Kurt exceeded his duty as my lawyer! He went above and beyond to defend me and help me understand my rights in my case. My case was difficult since it dealt with parties in another state, but he found journals that were similar to my situation that he presented in court. He really did his homework. I have worked with multiple lawyers and have never been as satisfied as I have been with Kurt. I know you can trust him to get the job done the way you feel is best for You.

Great Experience. Fantastic Results!
I was recently charged with what I felt was a serious crime that could have long lasting consequences. I did not want the crime to go on my permanent record and affect future employment opportunities or graduate school application. Luckily I was able to obtain Kurt Helgesen as my attorney. This was my first experience in dealing with the law and the court system so I was very unsure about everything. In my initial meeting I was able to talk to Kurt about my case and what my possible options were. I immediately felt better as he explained my constitutional rights in defending myself. He told me exactly what would happen when I appeared in the courtroom before the judge so there were no surprises. This gave me comfort and confidence throughout the duration of my case. The day of my pretrial Kurt met me at the courtroom and my uneasiness that I had felt that day was calmed. All I had to do was sit and wait. Kurt was able to meet with the prosecutor and after reasoning and doing whatever lawyers do when they are hashing out deals was able to reach a very favorable outcome for me. I had originally been charged with a class B misdemeanor. It carried a maximum punishment of 6 months jail time and $1000 fine. It was knocked all the way down to a measly infraction and $100 fine! Initially the prosecutor was only willing to drop it to a class C misdemeanor but Kurt knew he could still get a better deal for me. I knew I received a good deal when the prosecutor presented the new proposed arrangement before the judge and the judge had to have the prosecutor repeat it. The judge was still struggling to see how this class B charge had been dropped to an infraction level charge and this is when Kurt stepped in again. Kurt was standing with me before the judge and asked to counsel with him, to explain why this agreement had been made. This was vital since the judge clearly explained to me that he could assign any punishment he wished, the prosecutors proposal was merely a suggestion that he, the judge, usually followed. After hearing Kurt out the judge basically went along with the proposal. I was cited for an infraction and $130 fine (the judge raised the fine $30). After paying the fine, I was home free! I don't have to worry about this stupid event in my life anymore. I would recommend Kurt Helgesen to anyone needing legal help for the first time. His ability be personable and relate to me for the unknown journey ahead was assuring. Then again I would recommend Kurt to anyone hiring a lawyer regardless of their law background because of the favorable outcome he was able to obtain for me. CASE CLOSED.

Paternity and Parent time
In our case we live in New Jersey so it was hard to find a lawyer in Utah and trusting without even meeting the lawyer but we found Kurt Helgesen. He is a very honest lawyer and very loyal always making sure we were up to date on the case. He would always answer our questions via email or telephone and as soon as he was able to, didn't matter the time. He cares about your situation as if it was his own. We are very thankful for all the help and good advices, also for the time he took in our case. We recommend Kurt to anyone that needs assistance on a case.

Great lawyer, dedicated to his clints.
Kurt along with his office staff kept me informed as to how my case was going and what I could expect next. He spoke clearly to me and made sure to answer all my questions until he knew I understood completely. Also had a great sense of humor witch was appreciated through the ruff and emotional time a divorce can bring. I highly recommend Kurt Helgesen to represent you in the court system.

Child Custody
I am very pleased with the services Mr. Helgensen provided on my case. I will recommend his services to all my friends if they ever need a professional lawyer. I will hire him again for sure. It is very hard to find a trustworthy lawyer. Mr. Helgensen did what he said and beyond on my case and I thank him for that.

Dedicated, True Professional. Took the headache out of my divorce.
Kurt handled my divorce very efficiently. My situation had a lot of unknown variables due to debt, self employed business and rental properties. I thought it was going to be really complicated and was going to take a long time, but he really knew what he was doing and was able to answer all my questions very clearly. He was also very good at responding in a timely manner anytime I had a question or concern. He is a fair attorney and was able to look out for my best interests. I got everything I wanted and more out of my divorce.

Kurt was very friendly and honest and kept us informed on what was happening. Kurt was patient and took his time to explain things to my sister who has a hard time understanding legal stuff and what the judge was wanting from us. I would highly recommend Kurt to anyone who is in need of legal help. If ever in need of an attorney again, I would definately go back to Kurt.

Car Warranty Paybacks
I was having problems with a used car purchase. The dealership sold me some warranties that they said I could cancel if I wanted to, but when I tried to cancel them, they would not let me. They kept on giving me the run a round and that is when I knew I needed Kurt's expertise on the matter. As soon as I Kurt got involved, the ball was rolling and the dealership suddenly wanted to work with me. The dealership was willing to give me some of the warranty money back but Kurt would not allow for that and I ended up getting every single penny back that I requested. This saved me thousands!! I owe this all to Kurt's professionalism and willingness to not back down. He corrected a very stressful circumstance and turned it into a sweet victory!

Very bad
Horrible layer he was not good in my case but I believe all his excuses. I sent others to him but he was just as bad or worse. You would be better off just pleading guilty don’t waste your money. He just rides on his dads reputation.

Worst
Unorganized, never responds to emails, he was unorganized in the court hearing and was not prepared. It appears he can't keep a staff. Don't hire this firm

Has issues with women
My brother and I took our mother to see him about her divorce amendment case. He asked if she contributed financially to the marriage which caught her off guard, she said she didn't have a career and is a mother and homemaker. Kurt then told her, "how do you expect to get paid alimony if you didn't contribute to the marriage financially?" Kurt then said he wouldn't take the case since he didn't want another "loss" on his record!

Response from Kurt Helgesen June 30, 2019
Thank you for your comments. I recall meeting with your Mother very well. She was a very kind person, and I wished I could help her more. As you know, I met with and consulted your mother for a free 30 minute consultation. I spent well over an hour with her trying to help. Whether she was deserving of the alimony was never discussed, she clearly was entitled to it pursuant to the original Order. The only question was her ex husband’s ability to continue paying the alimony as he had been medically determined “unable to work.” In your Mother’s consultation, relevant issues with her previous attorney were also discussed, her claim was that her attorney improperly allowed her to sign an Order modifying the original Order. The claim was that the attorney should have known that your Mother was not of sound mind when she agreed to the modification. This Order made collection of past alimony and her ex husband’s retirement extremely difficult, even impossible without challenging what her previous attorney had done. This fact, alone, placed me in a very difficult position being that I personally knew the previous attorney, respected the attorney and knew that this attorney had since become a Judge. As such, I informed your Mother her case was a very difficult one and unfortunately not one I was willing to take. In addition to the above, I knew from experience it would be an expensive case to litigate as her case would likely require medical experts from out-of-state. Ultimately, I denied the case for various reasons, but none of those were out of concern for “my record.” As for taking issues with women, it is true that I am sometimes paid to “take issue” with people, unfortunately. But I assure you I took absolutely no issue with your Mother, and I do not take issue with people on account of their gender. I very much enjoyed meeting your Mother, she was a very likable, lovely person in an extremely unfortunate, difficult situation. I can’t help wonder if you have somehow confused me with another consultation; I never said any of those things, I took time to listen to and advised your Mother very respectfully and she thanked me for my time and honesty when she left. I wish her the very best. Please give her my regards.

Very Non Professional
Very non professional lawyer. We went to trial and he did not even know my case. I would not recommend him or his firm at all. I was constantly calling him to get an update on my case and he never had answers and charged me for the phone calls.
Response from Kurt Helgesen July 28, 2016
I am sorry that someone might feel this way. I do not know who you are and I do not recognize your story. I have never gone to trial unprepared. That simply did not happen. Please contact me so that we can discuss your case and your concerns. I would very much appreciate the opportunity to speak with you to resolve this. Thank you.

He did absolutely nothing
I was arrested on a warrant and my mom retained Kurt Helgesen for me. After almost 2 weeks, I found out that he had done absolutely nothing on my case. He did not even know the difference between a cash and surety bond. The prosecutor on my case changed three times within a week and he had no explanation as to what happened. Maybe he is good for civil cases, but he seemed out of his depth when it came to a complex criminal case.

Melissa, thank you for the feedback. I am sorry to hear that you feel nothing was done for you. Please know this is not true. As you know, we never actually spoke to each other because your arrest took place in another State, where you were being held. Despite my efforts, our only communication with you was through your elderly Mother, I imagine there must have been some miscommunication. I cared very much about your case and did all that I could to negotiate the terms of your release and avoid extradition. Ultimately, your waiver of certain rights in the other State made that impossible. Please call me, I'd be happy to speak with you in more detail about your concerns.
