I am a registered patent attorney and a founding partner at Buchanan Nipper. I am admitted to practice in the State of Idaho, and work out of our Idaho office. I have spent my entire legal career working in intellectual property law.
I handle a wide variety of patent and trademark work, including counseling clients on means of protection, preparation and filing of applications, prosecution, and licensing. My main background and experience is in the mechanical arts, including agricultural technology, and the biological sciences.
I am the author of The Invent Blog®, one of the oldest patent law blogs. The Invent Blog® covers technology tips, intellectual property news, and information relevant to independent inventors, small businesses, and the attorneys that serve them.
I decided when I began my career, that watching my kids grow up was more important than working 80 hours a week in a big city high rise. Balancing a successful career with being home at night to help my kids with their homework remains an important goal for me. You should see the science projects my kids turn in!
The first dozen years I practiced law, I worked in small patent law firms for small business and independent inventor clients. I couldn’t have asked for better experience…particularly the years I spent litigating. While I have no interest in ever again being a litigator, knowing how litigators think made me a considerably better prosecutor.
If you see me wearing a tie, it is probably a day when I “attorney-coach” a local high school’s mock trial teams. It isn’t often you see people truly excited about our legal system (most attorneys would do something else if they could), and their excitement is infectious. Plus, they are amazing performers who would easily beat most attorneys. That fact is one of the most encouraging things you’ll ever see.
I enjoy camping with my family, it is one of the “perks” of living in Idaho. I’m sorry if a few weekends a year you can’t reach me on my cell phone… When we’re not camping, I’m likely at a kid’s soccer game, working in the yard, gardening, or working on one of the four different remodeling projects we have going on at any one time.
