About me

My approach to the legal profession is simple: I give my clients the very best I can give in protecting their rights and advocating on their behalf.

Over the years, I have found that my experience in the field of criminal law makes me a more effective litigator in civil cases, and vice versa.  Many cases have both civil and criminal aspects and it helps to have your legal team well-versed and able to operate competently in both arenas.  Whether you stand accused of a criminal act, are the victim of a crime or the victim of someone's negligence, recklessness or intentional tort, the first step to protecting yourself is consulting with a competent lawyer who regularly goes to trial in such cases.  Very few lawyers are litigators.  Fewer still litigators can justifiably call themselves a "Trial Attorney."  Have a look at my case track record.

My office is in downtown Aspen and my door is open to my clients anytime.  Hire me, and you will deal directly with me at all times.  At my firm, we are very proud of our hard-earned reputation for being tenacious fighters that are unafraid to take on the tough cases.  A fair amount of our new cases come as referrals from past clients we have helped and sometimes people and companies we have sued in the past later want to hire us.  We take that as a very sincere form of professional compliment.

With the exception of some civil cases that I litigate from time to time in federal court, I limit my cases and trials to the state courts of Pitkin, Eagle and Garfield Counties on the western slope of Colorado.  Referals from Denver, out of state and internationally are welcome when you need the "Aspen hometown advantage."

If your matter is run of the mill or destined for a quick and easy settlement, there are more than a few other firms in town that can help you.  However, if your case is a tough one or if you are going up against a strong adversary, or if you just want to work with a lawyer that you can deal with one-on-one who will treat you with the respect you deserve, please give me a call to discuss your case and see if my firm can help you. I never shy away from a good fight and I will earn every penny of my fee.

  • Christopher Daniel Leroi

Jeff is one of the very best attorneys that I have encountered in 24 years of practice. I have served as a judge, prosecutor, and private practice attorney and his ethics, morals, and professionalism is simply amazing. I am frankly shocked and appalled that Avvo would not give him a 10.0 rating. I refer any litigation or consultation issues for clients in the Vail-Aspen area or the middle of Colorado for that matter to only Jeff Wertz. I KNOW that they will be in the most capable of hands and that they could trust their lives with Jeff. I had a case against Jeff in which my client was more than difficult and Jeff did not hold it against me. I hold him in the highest of regards and respect him much more than the average attorney. Hiring Jeff might very well be one of the best decisions that you make in your entire life. I would hire him in a heartbeat if I needed him and lived in his geographical area.

I first met Jeff when I was a prosecutor in Glenwood Springs and Aspen. He is a highly skilled litigator who is always prepared. His knowledge of the law is excellent. I would highly recommend Jeff to anyone look to hire an attorney.

Professional misconduct

This lawyer was disciplined by a state licensing authority.

  1. Reciprocal - Suspension
    issued in PA, 2008

This means that the attorney's misconduct in another state, or jurisdiction, also violated the rules for practicing law in Pennsylvania.

Jeffrey’s comment: “This is based on nothing more than the Colorado matter. In October of 2003, I accepted shares of ownership in a new business formed with a former client and my firm unfortunately failed to obtain a written informed consent from a former client under R.P.C. 1.8. This oversight was not brought to my attention until 2007. In hindsight, I wish the technical violation had never occurred, but it did and I stand by my decision to accept my share of the blame. I am happy to discuss it at any time”

  2. Suspension
    issued in CO, 2007

Suspension means an attorney lost his or her license to practice law for a period of time. The attorney typically returns to practicing law when the suspension expires.

Jeffrey’s comment: “In October of 2003, I accepted shares of ownership in a new business formed with a former client and my firm unfortunately failed to obtain a written sign-off of the former client's informed consent under R.P.C. 1.8. This oversight was not discovered nor noticed nor brought to my attention until 2007. I never denied that this occurred and I accepted responsibility. Since this matter concluded, I have been fully investigated, accepted, and admitted as a member of the Bar of England and Wales.”
