Mitchell Katine is a founding partner with the law firm of Katine & Nechman L.L.P. Over the course of his career, Mitchell has not only distinguished himself as an outstanding professional with unique talents and expertise in a myriad of legal fields, he has also been a community leader and advocate for many of the most marginalized in our society. He is perhaps best known as having served as local counsel for John Lawrence and Tyron Garner in the landmark United States Supreme Court case of Lawrence v. Texas, which created new paradigms in U.S. privacy law jurisprudence.

After 20 years, including 11 as partner, at the prominent Houston firm of Williams, Birnberg & Andersen, L.L.P., Mitchell decided to start his own practice with his new law partner, John Nechman. He continues to concentrate on the areas of real estate, with a special emphasis on real estate litigation, homeowner association law, title insurance matters, landlord-tenant disputes, and adjoining landowner issues. He also handles employment and HR matters, estate planning and probate, general and business litigation, as well as insurance, adoption, and disability (including HIV and AIDS) matters.

Mitchell was born in Miami, Florida and received his bachelor's degree in mass communications and public relations at the University of South Florida in Tampa. In 1982, he moved to Houston, where as a student at South Texas College of Law, he served on the school's law review, made the Dean's List every semester, and graduated summa cum laude with the 4th highest G.P.A.in his graduating class.

While at Williams, Birnberg, & Anderson, L.L.P., Mitchell quickly forged a reputation as an attorney of formidable skills. He also became a certified mediator, a publisher of numerous law-related articles, and nationally-known speaker and Continuing Legal Education presenter on numerous topics. In 1993, Texas Governor Ann Richards appointed him to the Texas Real Estate Commission, where he served as a Commissioner for 6 1994, he became an adjunct professor at South Texas College of Law, and in 2001, he took on the same role at the University of Houston Law Center, teaching "HIV & The Law." He has also served on the State Bar of Texas's Grievance Committee Panel as well as the Disability Issues Committee.

Since the early days of the HIV/AIDS crisis, Mitchell has been a stalwart leader in the battle to help those with HIV/ has also helped create numerous GLBT legal organizations in Houston and Texas, and he regularly appears on local and national television and radio programs where issues such as same-sex marriage, gay and lesbian adoption, HIV/AIDS, and civil rights are discussed and debated. He is particularly proud of his role as local counsel in the Lawrence case, in which the Supreme Court overruled the case of Bowers v. Hardwick and overturned all sodomy statutes in the country.

Among his many awards, Mitchell has received the Humanitarian Award from the Houston Conference on AIDS in America, the Advocacy Award from the Bar Association for Human Rights of Greater Houston, the State Bar of Texas's Frank J.Scurlock Award and Judge Norman Black Award, a Community Service Award for Outstanding Citizenship from Houston's ABC affiliate Channel 13, an award as "Top Attorney" from H Magazine, the John Walzel Political Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign, and an award as Outstanding Civil Rights Attorney from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and he was named a Texas Monthly Magazine "Super Lawyer" 3 years in a row.

Mitchell and his partner, Walter, have fulfilled a lifelong dream of having a family by adopting two children, Sebrina and Sebastian. In their free time, the family enjoys the outdoors, especially playing softball with the Legal Eagles, a Montrose Softball League team sponsored by Katine & Nechman L.L.P.

Real estate question handled promptly and professionally.
I consulted with Mitchell, who was a referral from our HOA's attorney, on a small matter involving the condo unit above mine. Our in-person consultation was thorough and Mitchell was professional in his demeanor and came up with an easy-to-follow plan of action. He also placed a call during the meeting to the other party, which I believe got the other party moving on the issue I was having. I would definitely recommend Mitchell to others.

Looking for the best well you found him
Mr. Katine took my case when I needed an honest and aggressive lawyer, I had no idea how important my case was and how bad I would need him. Mr. Katine is not like other lawyers he is kind but also tells you exactly how it is most importantly he was always available for us I never had to wait for him to call me back because he answered his phone every time I called he would drive across town just to help us and honestly there was not much in it for him, as time went by realized that I had chosen the perfect person to help us Mitch is smart and kind and the most driven person I know, the only person I can compare him to is Kobe Bryant if you need someone you can trust then hire Mitchell Katine you will be glad you did.

CLOSING DATE EXPIRED
I hired Mr. Katine and his team to represent me when the potential buyer of my home did not comply with our contract. The contract expired and I no longer wished to sell my home; I was being mislead by realtors & brokers as to what I could and could not do. Mr. Katine and his team are very knowledgeable and experienced; they took control and the matter was quickly resolved.

Probate
The death of a loved one is so hard. Mitchell was so kind and compassionate with settling the affairs of my spouse's estate. He was clear about what I needed to bring to our initial appointment and subsequent appointments to streamline time together, and therefor charges. Fully explained what would happen when and followed through beautifully. This was so much easier than I anticipated, mainly due to Mitchell's experience, organization, and documents to walk one through the process along with a top notch staff.

First time needing a lawyer, so glad I chose Mitchell
Mitchell went above and beyond to help my husband and I on an issue with an issue involving our new construction home project. He listened to our issue, I brought him all the evidence and he agreed to help us out. He was always on our side and willing to make offers for us. He went above and beyond and read every document. I HIGHLY recommend Mitchell if you have any issues dealing with big companies and home building. Thank you Mitchell for all you did.

EXCELLENT LEGAL COUNSEL
Mr. Katine is an excellent attorney who pays careful attention to "details" and follow-up. I have dealt with many attorneys in the past and never have I experienced the diligence and preparedness like that of Mr. Katine. I approached Mr. Katine with a difficult and contentious legal issue in which he was able to efficiently see through to he end which resulted in a positive outcome, all in a timely manner. lastly, what I truly appreciate about Mr. Katine compared to others that I have worked with is that Mr. Katine effectively communicates with you at every stage of the engagement all the way to the end. Never once did I have to contact Mr. Katine for an update to my case, wherein he either called or emailed me beforehand, none of which I have ever experienced with other legal counsel.

Unemployment claim
I was fired based on false claims made against me by one of the employees I supervised. A friend recommended that I consult Mr. Katine and I am very glad I did. I assumed that I would not qualify for unemployment since I had been fired allegedly for cause, but Mr. Katine advised me how I could still qualify for unemployment by contesting the grounds of my discharge. My unemployment claim was granted. Later my employer appealed the decision to grant my claim and Mr. Katine helped me prepare for the appeal hearing. My employer did not appear at the hearing, in my opinion because they saw how well Mr. Katine had prepared in his pre-hearing filings, so my unemployment claim was upheld. Throughout the process, Mr. Katine was very responsive and provided excellent information and advice to help me get through the claim and appeal process. I would not have had a successful claim without his help. He was also very pleasant to work with and gave me hope and assurance during a difficult time.

Excellent attorney
My husband and I retained Mitchell Katine to handle a dispute with our HOA. We consulted (on a pay as you go arrangement) with him a couple of times prior to retaining him for legal advice on the matter, since we were initially hopeful that we could settle the matter without having to retain an attorney. He was very helpful and we did not feel pressured to retain him - he just patiently answered all our many questions. Once we determined we needed an attorney, we retained him without hesitation. He was very responsive to us throughout, he handled all matters in a very timely fashion and his billing was very reasonable. He also refunded the unused portion of our retainer promptly. However, the most important part is that we prevailed and the HOA dismissed the lawsuit!!! I highly recommend Mitchell Katine - you will not be disappointed in his services. He will be honest and direct with you, which is what you need when you are dealing with a lawsuit. You need to know exactly where you stand and what your legal options are. He is highly knowledgeable and highly skilled.

Excellent Attorney
I was referred to Mitchell Katine by my doctor to discuss filing a long term disability claim with my employer's group insurance. I had been talking with my doctor for years about seeking disability and was very nervous about moving forward with a claim. I finally met with Mitchell for an initial consultation and to discuss the LTD process. I brought some of my medical papers, along with company plan documents for his review and recommendation. We discussed what the possibilities were and he put me at ease right away. I had lots of questions and he was very patient with me. I appreciated this, since I have some cognitive disabilities, which can be very frustrating to others. I listened and felt very comfortable with hiring Mitchell to help with the initial filing of the claim. He told me what he thought was missing and gave me sound advice on what I should include before filing the claim. I did exactly what he said and he helped guide me through the process and before I knew it the claim was approved. I totally trust Mitchell for any future legal advice and will be using him for estate planning and any additional LTD issues. He is extremely knowledgeable and was accessible by phone or email whenever I needed to ask a quick question. I highly recommend him to others in need of legal counsel for LTD claims or any other legal work.

Mitchell is worth more than five stars!
After being terminated from my employer abruptly and unexpectedly for false accusations, I was lost and confused. I had never been fired before, nor had I ever been accused of the things they accused me of. They were quick to try to get me to sign a severance agreement that waived all of my rights. I did a quick search for an attorney and came across Mitchell Katine. I sent in a contact us form on his website and he immediately contacted me. The initial phone conversation was genuine and not rushed, and ultimately he asked me to bring all of my documentation into the office so that I would be able to show him what was going on. Though I was dealing with lack of income during the holiday season from being out of work, I knew I needed guidance and needed to spend the money. Best $250 I had ever spent on a consult. When meeting with Mitchell, he took his time to get to know me and the issues that came up. He reviewed the severance agreement they gave me and provided his opinion on how to proceed but ultimately let me make the final decision with the facts of how to approach this situation I was in. After we came up with a game plan of how to handle the severance agreement, Mitchell offered to handle communicating the change requests to the severance agreement with my former employer's HR team. When they did not answer and sent an email to me about contacting their attorney, Mitchell stepped in and took the lead on handling it all for me. He did not stop helping even through the unemployment filing process. Every time I had a question or a thought or just needed some guidance, Mitchell was available by phone or email and was very quick to respond. Mitchell truly cares about his clients and his community and it shows. He not only went above and beyond what I originally paid for to help me out, but he also took the time out of his busy schedule to learn about me. He helped me understand what was happening and helped me plan how to get back on my feet with health insurance and unemployment. He's not just an attorney, he's an amazing person who wants to help those who need it. I would highly recommend anyone who finds themselves in a situation where they feel burdened or overwhelmed to reach out to him. You'll find his personality infectious and his desire to help will give you reassurance that despite the negative you're going through, there is still positive people in the world. He will definitely be the person I will always turn to and have in my corner when I need him. THANK YOU SO MUCH MITCHELL!

Excellent
Mitchell prepared estate planning documents for myself and my partner (now deceased). Whenever I had occasion to use one of the documents he prepared -- at the hospital, hospice, funeral home, bank -- the first reaction was invariably something like, "Oh, thank God you have this!" Losing a loved one is already painful enough. Had it happened without estate planning documents, it would have been a nightmare. The fee for the document preparation was very reasonable, and Mitchell himself is not only obviously competent as a lawyer but also very welcoming and pleasant. I definitely recommend him.

Disability Claim
My husband and I were referred to Attorney Mitchell Katine to guide us through our disability claim and it has been a very positive experience. Mr. Katine is extremely knowledgeable and provides sound advice at each step of the process. He makes a point of being accessible and provides timely responses to our emails and phone calls. As an advocate in dealing with our insurance company, Mr. Katine ensured we understood the process so that we did not make any errors. We would recommend him to others in need of legal counsel for LTD claims or any other legal work that is required.

In the brief time we had for our consultation Mr. Katine looked over my paperwork and listened to what was going on. His advisement and continued help after our consultation is what help us the most. I can not say enough on how well he did.

An Advocate
Two words come to mind when reflecting on Attorney Mitchell Katine and his help with my legal matter, Super Lawyer! My HOA would not correct several deficiencies that affected my home, the roof leaked continually and the siding on the home was deteriorating and had fallen into disrepair. Despite many conversations, emails, and letters with HOA board members, the management company, and the HOA attorney the issues persisted. Attorney Katine contacted the necessary parties on my behalf and counseled me on the most prudent course of action. After Attorney Katine’s intervention, the necessary repairs were made, and the issue was resolved favorably and economically. Attorney Katine’s services were invaluable in bringing about a common-sense solution. I recommend Attorney Katine’s services for anyone seeking assistance in resolving HOA matters.
