True story: Late night on March 29th, 2021, I ended a very tumultuous and extremely toxic relationship with a woman. I went to stay at my 72-year-old mother's house for the night. 5 hours later, we were awakened by 5 officers shining flashlights in the windows and beating on the door like they were c...onducting a meth bust. No less than 6 officers and 3 San Angelo Police Department SUVs were outside of my elderly mother's home and I was arrested for Family Violence. I demanded to see the evidence and the arresting officer responded with, "We don't have to show you that." I was read my rights and never interviewed by any officer from SAPD. The alleged victim was allowed to submit pictures that she had supposedly taken with her own phone of her vaginal area that showed supposed bruising caused by my pushing her onto a concrete floor. A female officer was never called to the scene and her supposed injuries were never inspected or verified by any member of the SAPD - they just took her word for it. I did not commit this crime.
My brother drove to San Angelo from San Antonio and bonded me out of jail within a couple of days. 44 days after I was arrested, I appeared in court for the first time. When the preliminary trial commenced, I was arrested a second time inside the courtroom for a new charge of credit card abuse - a state jail felony - from the same girl. She claimed that I had stolen her credit card and that she "...noticed charges on her account that she didn't make..." after we had broken up. The "detective" that handled this case failed to verify any of her claims and immediately charged me with a felony crime. The SAPD "detective" never bothered to talk with me so that I could answer to her claims against me nor was I ever interviewed by any member of the San Angelo Police Department - they just took her word for it.
Stephanie handled both cases.
After 6 long months of the SAPD and the District Attorney resisting, she presented evidence that disproved their case of Credit Card Abuse and they were forced to dismiss the case.
Despite the obvious display of sloppy police work and my accuser's own admission of pushing me on the night in question, the Assistant DA for Tom Green County refused to back down. Instead, over the course of 2 years and 3 months, he and his co-chair used intimidation tactics, through Stephanie of course, to manipulate me into accepting a plea of guilty with time served. I refused to plead guilty to a crime I didn't commit and chose to take it to trial.
On the day of my trial, Stephanie showed up to the courthouse dressed like a woman in charge. She was crystal clear in her instructions to me and explained all of her processes in a way that I understood, as I am not an attorney. From jury selection to proper court procedure, to her questioning and cross-examinations, and to her closing arguments, Stephanie remained poised and in total control of the entire trial - she was always 5 steps ahead of the opposing witnesses as we as the Assistant DA and his co-chair.
2 long years and 3 months later, it took an all-female panel of 6 jurors approximately 20 minutes to return to the courtroom with a verdict of "NOT GUILTY" by unanimous decision!
