Peter ("Pete") Corcoran is the founder of Corcoran IP Law.  Mr. Corcoran’s practice is focused on contingency and blended-fee patent litigation, trials, appeals, licensing, and monetization throughout the United States. For inventors and small business owners, Peter is the perfect fit for affordable representation with all the skills of "big firm" lawyers without inflated big firm costs. Few lawyers have Peter's experience as a patent examiner, patent prosecutor, law clerk to federal district court and Federal Circuit Court of Appeals judges, 20+ years of patent litigation and acquisition experience, two masters degrees, and a retired Navy Commander.

Mr. Corcoran has litigated dozens of patent infringement cases from complaint through trial and appeal, including fact and expert discovery, depositions, infringement and invalidity contentions, expert reports, technology tutorials, claim construction, and transfer, discovery, dispositive, trial, and post-trial motions. He has a unique familiarity with patent law, local patent rules, and procedures in the federal district and appeals courts, especially in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Mr. Corcoran served as a law clerk to retired Chief Judge Randall Rader of the Federal Circuit and to retired Chief Judge David Folsom of the Eastern District of Texas. From these clerkships and his litigation experience, Mr. Corcoran provides his clients with a distinctive and unparalleled understanding of the federal district courts and the Federal Circuit.

Before founding Corcoran IP Law, Mr. Corcoran worked as a patent litigator at Kirkland & Ellis and Winston & Strawn—two of the nation’s top patent litigation firms. He also worked as a patent litigator at Thompson & Knight in Dallas and at the contingency patent litigation boutique Antonelli, Harrington & Thompson in Houston. At these firms, Mr. Corcoran gained the valuable patent litigation experience and creative skills that he continues to provide his clients.

During law school, Mr. Corcoran was a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office ("PTO") for four years, where he examined hundreds of patent applications in the speech signal processing and computer software arts. This experience provided Mr. Corcoran with firsthand knowledge of the patent application process and Patent Office procedures. Before law school, Mr. Corcoran worked for Harris Corporation, developing user-interface software for the nation’s air traffic control system. This experience, in addition to his PTO experience, provided Mr. Corcoran with valuable knowledge of commercial software design, development, and testing that he uses when representing his clients in software patent infringement suits.

Mr. Corcoran’s bachelor and master’s degrees in electrical engineering, and his master’s degree in intellectual property (“IP”) law, provide him an even deeper understanding of electrical, computer, software, semiconductor, and telecommunications technologies and their relationship to patent law. Mr. Corcoran frequently writes and speaks about the latest intellectual property topics and is an active member of multiple Texas and national IP bar associations.

Mr. Corcoran served in the United States Navy (active duty and reserves) and retired as a “Mustang” Commander (O-5) after beginning his career nearly twenty-seven years earlier as an enlisted Airman (E-1). For nineteen years, Commander Corcoran constructed, maintained, and modernized nuclear submarines, surface ships, and nuclear aircraft carriers as a project manager and engineer. He continues to serve veterans by representing them pro bono before the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and the Federal Circuit involving veterans' benefits claims.

Mr. Corcoran is admitted to practice law in Texas; Arkansas; California; District of Columbia; United States Patent and Trademark Office; United States District Courts for the Eastern, Northern, Western, and Southern Districts of Texas; United States District Courts for the Northern, Central, and Southern Districts of California; United States Courts of Appeals for Veterans Claims and the Fifth and Federal Circuits; and the United States Supreme Court.

SO THANKFUL I FOUND Mr. Corcoran! He was my saving grace!!!
I was served with divorce papers in October. I called and met with MANY attorneys. Living in a small town where my (now X) husbands family has lived for generations and knows everyone made my lawyer search seem IMPOSSIBLE. Almost every lawyer had a "conflict" and couldn't take my case. I widened my search and found a lawyer in Dallas whom i retained and 3 business days before my first court date, he called me and said a conflict came up and he could no longer represent me. I was panicking (understatement) just started calling every number in google within 100 miles of here. The responses i got were either a hard NO, the travel fees would be as expensive as the retainer, or I could tell by talking to them that they were NOT interested in helping me and my kids. Peter Corcoran answered the phone himself!! He doesn't have an office full of assistants and secretaries to leave messages with that may or may not get returned. I spoke to him on Thursday and briefly explained my case. On Friday he made time to meet with me so i drove to his office and we spent all day going through my case so he would be familiar and ready to represent me that very next Monday. He also communicated with me over the weekend just to make sure he had all the information he needed for Monday. He is very intelligent and knowledgeable. His outstanding work ethic is demonstrated by his drive, attentiveness to details, professionalism as well as his confidence in the court room. He showed much compassion and patience as had many many questions and concerns. He never made me feel like I was bothering him or wasting his time. He took the time to answer all my questions and make sure i understood everything. When we walked into that court room on Monday morning i felt completely confident that Peter was prepared and ready to represent me even though he had just taken my case 3 days prior. Peter gave me a sense of feeling like I got my backbone / courage and voice back to be able to get through this divorce. Peter is NOT afraid to go up against the attorneys with the "big bad wolf / wicked witch" reputations. I am beyond thankful for him.
