One of Chicago's Best

You don’t go into marriage thinking you’re going to one-day divorce the one you love, but things happen, people fight, they become distant, and stop loving each other. So, after 5 years of emotional abuse and with no hope of my marriage getting any better I decided to end it. My first thought was..., “Where do I begin?” I searched the web, where there are literally dozens of divorce firms each one just as similar as the next. Then, I turned to my best friends who knew others who had gotten divorced and got a recommendation for Tiffany Hughes. My friend portrayed her as being very sweet and supportive, but also aggressive and determined. She was right. Throughout the course of my divorce Tiffany was terrific. She stood before the judge and fought tooth and nail for my fair share of the marital property, most of which was acquired by my ex-husband while we were still married. He was much wealthier than me. He didn’t want me to have anything after the marriage. But, Tiffany reassured me that I deserved my fair share of the estate, and I received just that and much more. Because of Tiffany’s strong representation, the judge awarded me the marital home and a substantial portion of our joint bank account, which I honestly don’t think I could have gotten if it wasn’t for Tiffany continuously stressing the importance of my circumstances and my position. I’m better now that it’s over. It was a long 14 months. But if I had to do it over again, I would never replace Tiffany. She was my support staff, my attorney, and I consider her now a friend. I would recommend her to anyone looking for help with their divorce. She is a great attorney, and she will fight for you until the bitter end.

Divorce Case

During the most stressful situation in my life, Tiffany made it as easy as possible for me. She was always quick to respond, helpful and always all my questions. She kept me informed on the status of my case and understood how quickly I wanted this resolved and was able to help my case move as fast... as possible. I had 100% confidence in her the whole time and she was positive when I was stressed with this whole situation. All around wonderful service!

Bad Experience

I had a terrible experience with this Law Firm. The Lawyer that I initially worked with quit, leaving me with a new lawyer I did not have the ability to choose which I would have appreciated. They then charged me for an introductory call with the new lawyer and I asked Tiffany to be on the call as sh...e was familiar with my case. I wanted to make sure the new lawyer understood the complexities of my case. I was told I would not be charged for this call. And rightfully so as it should not be my responsibility to get a new lawyer caught up because my original lawyer quit working at their firm. I then got a bill for both lawyer's time and for them to take notes... over $700 for this call. I let them know this was unacceptable and gave my reasoning and showed them the email that stated I would not be charged, and they dropped me! I spent thousands of dollars with this firm and I was at the end of my case! They knew by dropping me I would have to start over with a new firm and it would be even more costly so I explained this was not ok and all I asked for them to remove the charges for the call I was told I would not pay for. They didn't care. They then ran through a good portion of my remaining retainer, charging me hundreds and hundred to withdraw. This firm is not listed on Google and I believe there is a reason. The have too many bad reviews. This is not a firm I would ever suggest to anyone. Let the reviews, or lack there of, speak for themself!

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience. We pride ourselves on providing the most zealous and compassionate representation to all clients we work with. As you know, we did not charge you for the introductory calls and we did not charge you for any work completed to get the new Associate Attorney up to speed. Unfortunately, the previous Associate Attorney that was working on your case left the Firm solely because she decided to practice in a non family law field. That Associate Attorney was with the Firm for a very long time prior to her departure. As the Partner and lead Attorney on your case, I reassured you that I would make sure that the transition to the new Associate Attorney was flawless, and it was. Ultimately, we were unable to proceed forward with your case due to many factors and we were forced to withdraw from your case.

Dishonest billing

Was charged over and over for time spent correcting mistakes made by Tiffany Hughes and Dagny Broome, plus the time spent communicating about their mistakes. In addition, the contract you sign in the beginning allows them to continue billing you without your permission. I had to call my bank and bloc...k them from withdrawing more funds even after they were no longer on my case.

Buyer Beware!

Like many, I read the Avvo reviews and was wowed by the 5 stars, convinced this was the attorney for me. I hired her for my divorce. She presented herself as different from other attorneys out there, seemingly passionate about one's cause and doing for the children. Ms. Hughes lives and breathes her ...work and as one reviewer said is "a pitbull in stilettos" (she does have nice shoes). Ian, her associate, is truly impeccable with his attention to detail. However, it is time to unearth more. Ms Hughes' wowed clients, briefly including me, may have missed the fact that the 9% interest that she chooses to apply to any outstanding balance, per her contract terms, is not only unorthodox practice ANYWHERE, even amongst top-tier attorneys in Illinois, 9% is NOT the statutory interest rate in Illinois! Add that to her practice of issuing invoices as many times as she deems necessary in any given time period, outside the frequency in her contract, and bar none, she fleeces her clients financially dry faster than any attorney I have known to-date including ex-US. For those who may not have that 9% interest in your contract, you may have me to thank for that. No one should keep paying more for completed work. Ms. Hughes was passionate if given carte blanche; money flowing freely is the order of the day to get her to work for you. There are no payment plans with her if you are in a financial bind. She wants a credit card on file so she can charge you whenever she starts to get uncomfortable with your balance. You barely have time to review the invoice once shared before the funds disappear from your account. If a pre-payment amount she names, whenever she names it, preceding a court session is not delivered, she may not show up in court or ask the judge to push your hearing date further down the court calendar to cater to another client who just paid her. Her invoices come so often that you lose track of why the bills are so high and as overwhelming as divorce cases are, it is hard to look closely at her bills and see how the 9% interest rate is applied or identify multiple copies of and charges for the same service items. I did. Long story short, when I saw the light, questioned her contract terms (a tad too late), inconsistent billing practices and I was no longer willing to just give funds at her beck and call, she walked. Contrary to her own contract terms, she held my file hostage to the point of brazenly disobeying a court order that required her to release my file to allow me to go trial. As such, I could not go to trial on my case; it was dismissed. Her actions cost me a multi-year divorce effort with 6-digit monetary investment, notwithstanding the emotional turmoil that goes along with it for the children and all other parties involved. As if that was not enough, she decides to pursue me in court for what she thinks is still owed her and names a figure amount that is not congruent with any invoice she shared. Her attempt through divorce court was summarily shut down. I do not think my experience is unique though I am probably one of the few to have questioned her practices. Of the ~ 100 cases she has presumably had over her 10-year tenure, per her Avvo profile, less than half have given her rave reviews. Avvo is great but it does not tell the whole story about any attorney. My advice: thoroughly review her contract (or any attorneys for that matter), trust your gut and do NOT sign if something seems off or makes no sense. Question it, review your bills and if the answers are not forthright, walk. Of course if you are willing to do whatever it takes to make her "happy" including giving her carte blanche, she could work for you. But if you only want to pay what you should AND get divorced at last, fearlessly walk away; you may just spare yourself an unfortunate experience with a "pitbull in stilettos".

We regret to hear that your experience with the Firm was anything other than satisfactory, as evidenced by my other clients. At the Firm, we believe in making any case something that the client can afford. We offer payment plans and we also keep our client's informed of their available funds in their accounts so that they know at all times what they have remaining. Unlike other Firms, we don't run invoices once a month. We believe in providing invoices on a regular basis to keep our client's aware of the work completed and our next steps. Additionally, unlike other Firm's we don't put the client in debt. We work with what the client can afford and can't afford. At the Firm, you will only be responsible for the work that you request to be done on your case, nothing more. The Firm does not have any late charges for client's that pay their invoices whatsoever. As evidenced by my previous client's and their review's stating the same, the Firm prides itself in providing unparalleled work at a fraction of the cost of what other Firm's charge, while getting the issues resolved on an expedited basis and getting amazing results. However, in this case a client demanded work be completed over a long duration of time, promised payment day after day, but then refused to pay. Then, as evidenced here, when you seek payment for the work that they asked to be done they in retaliation write a negative review. The Firm advocates strongly and passionately for all client's, unfortunately, you have the very rare occurrence of when a client, such as this, refuses to pay for services rendered and this is the result.
