Brett D. Schandelson

About me

Brett is originally from Great Falls where he graduated from C.M.R. High School. He then attended Montana State University in Bozeman, where he earned a B.A. with high honors, an honors degree with highest distinction, and was recognized for his academic success with several awards. Most notable among the various academic distinctions earned by Brett were the Jim Goetz Award for the Outstanding Graduating Senior in Political Science, and the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence as the Outstanding Graduating Senior in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
While obtaining his undergraduate degree Brett was also a Washington, D.C. legislative intern for U.S. Senator Max Baucus, the president of the MSU College Democrats, and the Student Coordinator for the MSU AdvoCats. For his extracurricular and community involvement, Brett was awarded the Max Worthington Award for Service to Montana State University.
After deciding that he wanted to stay in Montana, Brett attended the University of Montana School of Law, where he earned a J.D. with honors. Among the scholarships and awards he received during law school, the one he is most proud of is the award for best written appellate brief. In addition to graduating in the top of his class, he was also heavily involved with the ACLU, even serving on the ACLU of Montana Board of Directors for a year. During law school he interned with a plaintiff’s firm for a year, a criminal defense attorney for a year, and worked as a Public Defender for a year, as part of his clinical education.
Brett joined Tipp & Buley upon his graduation from law school and on January 1, 2015, Brett became a shareholder of Tipp & Buley, P.C.. Brett has continued his interest in criminal and constitutional law with his work at the firm by concentrating his practice in the area of Criminal Defense and Civil Rights Litigation. The majority of his criminal caseload is devoted to defending those accused of Driving Under the Influence crimes.

Brett was the Montana State Delegate for the National College for DUI Defense (NCDD) from 2009 to 2012, attending the Summer Session at Harvard Law School in 2009. Brett has been taught Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) and certified pursuant to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) protocol for SFSTs. Brett is also a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) and the Montana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (MtACDL). Brett regularly attends the NCDD/NACDL joint DUI Seminar each year.
