If you don't have an I-485 pending ... which can't be filed, nor approved, then it would NOT be a good idea to go 'out of status'.
If you do that, you can't file the I-485 even if the waiver is approved.
If you were courageous enough to file the NIW and waiver applications without an attorney .... now would be a good time to spend a little money on a consultation with an attorney to verify things, and review your paperwork ... you may have made a mistake without even knowing it.See question

2. What type of application was submitted which resulted in the I-797
3. What type of other photo ID he has.
Bottom line: Without knowing more, I must say that a &(& for an EAD is NOT GOOD ENOUGH for travel past government checkpoints.See question

Will this be in the same company? If so, talk to their immigration attorney and NOT a NON-ATTORNEY in HR.
If it is going to be with a different company, talk to their immigration lawyer.
I must tell you that 'technical sales' rep visas are very difficult. I've done many for 'sales engineers' and they aren't easy.
Cosmetic tech sales rep? That will be a challenge.
