  • My husband and I will both take a double last name. Is there any legal difference to using a hyphen or no hyphen in our name?

While all medical/legal documents will have the double last name I am a psychologist and would like to use my maiden name professionally. Is there a way to accept personal checks in my maiden name and use a double last name personally? We live...

    Matthew’s Answer

There is no legal difference between using a hyphen or not. Whether a bank would be ok with checks written to you in your maiden name would probably be up to the bank. I suggest asking your bank about their policies with this.

  • Should I take my son's dad back to court as neither one of us pays child support?

I know my sons' dad makes more money than I do. We share joint/legal custody with 50/50 parenting time. His wife carries the insurance for my son. My son is coming to my house every day after school so I feel the parenting time isn't equal anym...

    Matthew’s Answer

His spouse's income does not count towards his. You may be able to argue that parenting time isn't 50/50 and the court order, along with child support, should reflect this.

    Matthew’s Answer

If he refuses to work without good reason, you can ask the court to assign potential income to him. However practically, if he doesn't have money to pay you, you may have to be satisfied that his arrears to you are continuing to accrue.
