State of Wisconsin vs. Sexual Assault Defendant

Case Conclusion Date: 01.31.2007

Practice Area: Criminal defense

Outcome: Not guilty on all counts.

Description: A Crawford County man was acquitted on charges that he sexually abused a child. The jury returned the verdict Friday following a five-day trial. The client, a 65 year grandfather, of Eastman, Wisconsin had been charged with two counts of sexual assault. Criminal defense attorney Chris Van Wagner credited the jury with being "able to focus on the evidence and set aside the emotion," he said. Relatives of the alleged victim said trial delays -- postponed from August to January -- were difficult for the child. The trial was delayed numerous times. The last delay was caused by yet another tactic of an unprepared DA when he filed a motion at the last minute without adequate notice to the defense.
