About me

Katie Arthurs is a domestic relations attorney who counsels clients through difficult family affairs. Her practice is concentrated on several areas of law impacting families, including divorce, dissolution of marriage, child custody, visitation, child support, spousal support, and the division of marital estates. Katie represents both husbands and wives and keeps a “big picture” perspective when managing a variety of complex cases. She has proficiency in both litigation and alternative dispute resolution. She negotiates mutually satisfactory settlements and, if necessary, litigates cases through the domestic relations court.

Kaite has completed training in Collaborative Law. A collaborative divorce is when two spouses (and their lawyers) agree to work together in four-way settlement conferences to resolve their case through negotiations, in order to minimize the negative economic, social, and emotional consequences of litigation. She has also completed training in mediation.

Katie works efficiently with clients to find creative solutions to all family law matters.

Katie has experience:

  • Dividing marital estates including bank accounts, real estate, investments, and retirement plans;

  • Evaluating, protecting, and dividing closely-held business interests, including LLC’s, partnerships, S-corporations, C-corporations, and family-owned entities;

  • Tracing premarital, inherited, and gifted assets relating to separate property claims;

  • Drafting separation agreements and shared parenting plans;

  • Interpreting and evaluating the enforcement of prenuptial agreements;

  • Analyzing and accounting for misappropriated and/or concealed assets and other forms of financial misconduct;

  • Negotiating the allocation of parental rights and responsibilities including parenting time schedules, medical and education decision making, payment of extracurricular activities and other child related expenses, and issues concerning parental relocation;

  • Briefing and arguing matters in Ohio state appellate courts; and

  • Handling post-decree matters, such as the enforcement of court orders, non-disclosed assets, child support and spousal support modification, and child custody and visitation modification, including cases transferred from other jurisdictions.

  • Additionally, Katie works with unmarried mothers and fathers to address the establishment of paternity, child support, and custody/visitation issues in Juvenile Court. Katie has also helped many grandparents obtain visitation and other rights through domestic relations/juvenile custody proceedings, as well as guardianships and adoptions in Probate Court.

Katie has experience in handling issues concerning special needs children. She evaluates and addresses the continuation of child support and visitation after a child’s emancipation based upon physical and mental disabilities. Katie collaborates with other McCarthy Lebit attorneys to address other special needs issues such as estate planning, trusts, guardianships, and education planning (such as IEPs and 504 Plans).

Katie’s practice also entails the crafting of prenuptial agreements to protect premarital assets, business interests, and real estate in the event of divorce and/or death. She works strategically with clients to facilitate sensitive discussions between engaged parties.

In the unfortunate event of domestic violence, Katie has advocated on behalf of both petitioners and respondents, and has experience securing the modification of Civil Protection Orders. She collaborates with other McCarthy Lebit attorneys in the event of criminal action.

Katie is a Cleveland native. She graduated from John Carroll University, cum laude, with an English major and a Business minor. She graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, cum laude. Katie practices across Northeastern Ohio, including the counties of Cuyahoga, Summit, Geauga, Lorain, Portage, and Lake.
