About Brenda

Learn Brenda’s areas of practice.

Practice areas
  1. Probate
Probate is the legal process used to carry out a person's will after their death or the applicable law if the person had no Will. A probate attorney advises you on how to perform the duties you have in these cases.

    38 years, 250 cases

  2. Power of attorney
A power of attorney is a document you sign to give someone else the right to make legal decisions for you. Unlike a guardianship, the decision makers' authority is determined by the language used in the power of attorney form. A POA may be limited.

    38 years, 250 cases

  3. Wills and living wills
When you die without a Will, your property is divided according to state law & probating your estate is more expensive. With a Will you can set out how your property is divided. A Living Will states what you want done for you at the end of your life.

    38 years, 250 cases

  4. Guardianship
When a person is too young to make decisions or is incapacitated and can no longer care for their own interests, guardian law allows the court to appoint someone to make decisions for them. A legal guardian may be appointed as a limited guardian.

    38 years, 200 cases

  5. General practice
General practice attorneys perform a wide range of legal services but usually do not focus on a single area of the law. A general practice lawyer can give advice in many legal areas, and represent you in some cases.

    38 years, 370 cases

Service to others has been a driving force in my life since I was a small child. My parents taught me that we each have the abililty to help others and by doing so, we can touch their lives for the better.

I love helping people with their legal issues. Over the years, I've handled auto accidents, personal injury, probate matters, adoptions, contracts, municipal law, and many other kinds of cases.  I especially like handling difficult cases and those in which more than one area of the law is involved.  If you're uncertain whether I handle the kind of case that you have, please give me a call or email me. Thank you for your consideration!

I graduated from the University of Alabama Law School in 1980 and passed the State Bar exam that same year.  After graduation, I was very fortunate to serve as a law clerk writing draft court orders for Judge Richard L. Holmes of the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals.

I moved to Anniston in 1981 to work at a firm of great lawyers; the firm later became Dillon, Field, Monk & Stedham. As a young lawyer I also served as part-time Assistant District Attorney for Calhoun and Cleburne Counties.  In 2001, I opened my own law practice, which I ran for seven (7) years.  I  was then elected to serve as an Alabama Circuit Judge in the Family Division for Calhoun & Cleburne Counties. In January, 2015, I completed my service as a judge and opened Stedham Law Firm in Anniston.

Local Litigation for international company
Brenda litigated 2 Alabama lawsuits on behalf of my company. One involved a corporate violation of a non-compete agreement and the other concerned improprieties in a municipal contract bid. Brenda displayed excellent judgement in selecting local attorneys to assist in each case. She remained calm and precise in presenting evidence and examining witnesses in spite of the surly attitude displayed by opposing attorneys. She won damages for me in the first case and the second, in the words of opposing counsel "...she won eleven pages of the judgement but lost the last page..." because the defendant went back and amended the contract to comply with the bid specifications.

We all know we need to create a will, power of attorney, and appoint a health proxy. But, we put it off because it is not any fun and frankly, can be a little depressing. Brenda made this experience much more pleasant and even fun at times. She is extremely knowledgeable, very helpful and understanding. She does not rush the process and explains all of the decisions you must make until you are completely satisfied. My husband and I highly recommend Brenda (and her sweet assistant, Linda) for your legal representative. We will definitely go back to Brenda if a need arises.

Didn’t even bother to respond.
Tried to consult. See above. Could have had an underling call/ email me with a “sorry, you’re not worth my time” but didn’t.
Response from Brenda Stedham January 30, 2023
My records do not reflect any call from Anderson, much less one that has not been returned. Obviously I cannot respond to a message that I don't receive. My routine is to return calls within two business days. All the best, Brenda
