  • Can my parents force me to file for child support or file them selves?

I'm 17 and pregnant. I'll be 18 a couple of months before the baby is born. Can my parents get child support for my baby before the child is born, when I'm 17? When I don't want them to? Ps . I'm just trying to not get the father involved, when ...

    Jonathan’s Answer

They can't really force you, but the State can force you. I would recommend taking your parents advice. Raising a child is expensive, you need help. I understand you don't want him involved, but he is going to inevitably be involved. Good luck.

  • How can I formally ask child support to acknowledge the other non-custodial parent?

My daughter lives with her grandmother who opened a child support case a few years ago. Since I found out about the case (after the order was made, she gave them my address to collect) I have requested several times to have my daughters mother als...

    Jonathan’s Answer

I agree with my colleague. It is time to hire a Tampa Child Support Attorney to assist you in the matter. The Department of Revenue unfortunately isn't terribly responsive in these types of cases. I would recommend retaining an attorney to assist you. We handle these matters. Good luck.

I would say there is very little chance a 7 year old is going to be able to testify in Hillsborough County. Good luck.

  • I just went through a nasty custody battle over my daughter and lost. How do I file an appeal?

For most of the case I didn't have a lawyer since I couldn't afford one. My boyfriend loaned me $5k to retain one for the last couple months. Because my mother and grandmother and I are not getting along right now, they bad mouthed me to the guard...

    Jonathan’s Answer

I would recommend retaining an attorney to assist you in filing the appeal. The filing and arguing of an appeal is very fact specific and requires you to meet several strict guidelines. Further, the Second District Court of Appeals is not too forgiving for pro se litigants making procedural errors. Good luck.

I agree with my colleagues. Unfortunately at this point, it sounds as though post-conviction relief through a 3.850 or a similar motion is going to be difficult. I would recommend he retain counsel for the hearings and/or to properly file the motion. Our firm handles these matters. Good luck.

Yes, you can still hire an attorney to assist you in the matter to handle the violation of probation. You will go before Judge Perry since this is a technical violation in Hillsborough County. Good luck.

  • How to vet a potential criminal defense attorney?

How do I properly vet a potential attorney? Is there a way to find out their track record (how many cases they plead, trial experience, percentage of acquittals, etc.)? What other information should I seek prior to hiring an attorney?

    Jonathan’s Answer

I would recommend sitting down and meeting with as many attorneys as possible. Frankly, it will almost impossible for you to get all that information from publicly available sources. I would sit down and meet as many attorneys as you can and find out which ones you are most comfortable with. Good luck.

    Jonathan’s Answer

I would recommend an injunction as the first line of defense. I understand it may only upset him, but it sounds like it is the best option you have at this point. Further, it gives you a remedy, if he continues threatening and contacting you. Good luck!
