As a plaintiff trial attorney, Tom has been at the forefront of some of the Nation's worst environmental disasters, including assisting Hurricane Matthew victims with insurance claims, as well as representing those affected by the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon blowout. There he represented several Gulf Coast Area chambers of commerce opposing British Petroleum's Petition for a Writ of Certiorari with the Supreme Court of the United States.
In addition to his work at the Supreme Court, Tom represents hundreds of individuals, businesses and governmental entities against BP, and he has been successful in recovering tens of millions of dollars for these clients, both through the Court Supervised Settlement Program and in MDL-2179.
More recently, in late 2015 Tom was appointed to represent over 200,000 plaintiffs in an allocation proceeding involving a $1.24 billion settlement with Deepwater Horizon contractor Halliburton and rig owner Transocean.
Tom's latest work includes representing auto dealers and fleet owners in lawsuits against Volkswagen for economic losses sustained as a result of the German manufacturer's defective emission control devices.
Tom and his team have a comprehensive understanding of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, federal and state unfair trade practices laws, and other environmental legislation and regulatory schemes. As a result of this experience, Tom is well versed in complex, plaintiff-focussed multi-district litigation practice.
