Poor representation

I found Mindi on this site, and believe I would be doing other AVVO users an injustice if I were to not recount my experience with this attorney. My experience with Mindi started around AUG of 2013. My divorce would not be finalized until APR of 2014. In my opinion; she continually pushed to tak...e the case to trial, was poorly prepared during the mediation, did a poor job of preparing me for what to expect throughout the process, and misrepresented the costs I would incur. During mediation, I felt like she hadn't taken any time to familiarize herself with the case. I was prepared to pay alimony and child-support. However, when the opposing party presented their "offer" in mediation they were so far from what Mindi had said I would be paying, that it was simply infuriating. I ended up agreeing to a lesser amount. After 6 hours of sitting in a closed room with Mindi, where I never felt like she was the least bit prepared, or doing anything more than pushing to take the case to trial, I was over the mediation. We had come to terms on everything. I asked the mediator (whom Mindi had selected), "Is there anything I need to sign before leaving?" She said no. I asked Mindi, "Is there anything I need to sign before leaving?" She also said no. I had the mediator run my credit card and I left. Months later, Mindi was continuing to bill me for a variety of matters, even though everything should have been finalized that day in mediation. She did send threatening emails saying that she wasn't going to take any more action until the retainer was replenished. At one point, when I was refusing to pay her more, she called me and assured me verbally that this would be the LAST time I would be asked for another retainer. She did not honor what she said and a few weeks later she was billing me again. When I confronted her about the bill, and reminded her what she told me on the phone, she told me the reason the case was dragging on was because I left the mediation too early. I left the mediation when she said I could leave, and when her hand selected mediator told me I could leave. Mindi blaming me for the case dragging out was unprofessional, dishonest, a mis-representation of the facts, and the bills that were generated post mediation -- in my opinion -- where unfair. When the divorce was finally being signed off on, the opposing counsel found some loopholes in Mindi's paperwork and encouraged my ex-wife to fight for more money. The county in which we had the case is firm believer (and has a track record to show) that both parents having an equal time share is in the best interest of the children. Mindi never mentioned this, all the while knowing that a fair time share was the most important thing to me. I thought that I wouldn't get more than every other weekend. My research afterwards, and the experiences of friends going through similar matters, indicated that I didn't get nearly as many overnights with my children as I deserved, or was entitled to. There are more discrepancies that I would share, but one of the most important messages I can relay is this; I am in a situation now where my ex-wife is wanting to move the children out of state. Obviously, this will require legal representation. I will not be working with Mindi on this, or any other future legal needs.

I’m dismayed to learn that a former client was dissatisfied with my representation, especially learning that this occurred in 2013 and is just now being brought to my attention. Without commenting on any particular case, there are no legal “loopholes” that allow for any child to be relocated. In any case, pursuant to Chapter 61.13001, Florida Statutes, either parent may petition the court at any time to relocate with the minor child(ren). This is regardless of how an initial divorce or custody arrangement is settled or how judge decides a case. Perceptions of the facts can often be colored in highly emotional cases, which is particularly the case in family law. It is also important to realize that not all cases are the same—the result your friend or co-worker may have reached may not be the same result you will agree upon in mediation, or may not be the same result a judge would decide. Furthermore, there is no “norm” in a particular county—every cases is judged differently as every case and every family is unique and circumstances vary widely. I should also note that I discuss with my clients at great length their option to go to trial or to settle at mediation and although I can advise clients and recommend trial if I believe it is in the client’s best interests, the client is the ultimate decision maker. I’m always very prepared and strive to provide my clients outstanding representation, in the most cost-effective manner for a given circumstance. I encourage everyone to read the many positive reviews I have received, and to feel free to contact me for more information about the compassionate and aggressive counsel I provide my clients.

Qualified Attorney

It’s easy for anyone to find a lawyer these days with so many on the internet, but if you want a serious and qualified attorney look no further than Mindi Lasley. Beginning with the initial consultation and hiring process she was honest and upfront about all possibilities and prospects, and her and h...er staff, Yanna and Gloria, continued to deliver the same attention and professionalism to the very end. I was provided with copies of all documents as they came in, clear instructions on the proceedings, and prepared for all court dates. She runs an intelligent practice and does not hold back when it comes time to be aggressive. These are the qualities you want in the law firm that handles your custody case. Thanks again for all of your help and hard work ladies.

Sheer Excellence

Mindi is truly among the best lawyers in Tampa/St. Petersburg area. Her rates are reasonable and is she is willing to work with you for the payment. Her staff sends an electronic copy of the bill so that you can see exactly where you money goes. She returns all phone calls as soon as she possibly ...can and is honest about everything. Mindi’s staff is extremely professional and can usually answer questions without having to contact Mindi. They are very experienced which is very good for the consumer. If there is any question as to why call Mindi and ask. My case started in 2009 as a child relocation case and had evolved into multiple other cases concerning my child due to situations between my child’s mother and me. Our final case was setteled in Feb 2015. From approximately Aug 2010 to Feb 2015 I have not had a decision that did not go my way. My son’s mother has had approximately five lawyers in five years. The most recent lawyer was considered to be one of the best appeals lawyers in the area. Mindi is remarkable in the courtroom and has a very commanding presence when making her arguments. I have seen her literally leave the opposing council speechless or on a spiraling mumble to nowhere. Mindi is very well prepared and shows an extreme amount of attention to detail, which on one occasion lead to a decision in my favor. Over a period of five years I have never had a mistake on any document that Mindi has prepared and there has never been a mistake on any that was presented to the judge. I could tell that she is very well respected in the lawyering community by the professional courtesies and respect that she was given by her peers and also the respect she garnered from the courtroom staff. Mindi really cares about her clients and gives you all the tools you need to succeed. If you are honest with her and more importantly with yourself about your expected outcome there really is nothing to worry about.

Satisfied Client

I’ve been divorced before and I had a bad experience during my first divorce by going with a lawyer that didn’t focus in family law so I did a lot of research and made very certain that I hired the right lawyer this time. Ms. Lasley and her staff were always very professional, easy to get in touch w...ith and answered my questions, always kept me informed of what was going on and Ms. Lasley was extremely easy to talk to. I always felt like I was in good hands throughout the whole process. My case was quite contentious and I was extremely satisfied with my outcome. Ms. Lasley can be extremely reasonable and went above and beyond to save me costs and frustration during the process, but when it was obvious this approach wasn’t going to settle my case, she wasted no time in became extremely aggressive with my husband and his lawyer which did the trick. She was amazing in court. I couldn’t have asked for a better lawyer.

My strongest recommendation for an outstanding divorce attorney!

Mindi is an outstanding attorney! She was thorough, courteous and conscientious. She maintained constant and regular contact with me including numerous notes, phone calls and emails throughout the entire process. In fact, I was often surprised to see her working at all times of day and night to en...sure my issues were addressed. I routinely received answers to my inquiries in a timely manner. I would give my strongest recommendation to her and feel confident she would handle your case in an exceptionally competent and professional manner.
