I cannot say enough good things about Bill Powers. I know him as a friend, a neighbor and an attorney. We first used Bill’s legal services when our daughter as a new driver had several “moments of misunderstanding of the law” which resulted in speeding tickets. (For example, it’s OK to speed if you... need to pass a big truck or if your team has just won its first conference championship and you are headed to celebrate with teammates etc.) Bill was wonderful! He did not so much as help her get out of the tickets, but more provided a chance for her to understand the laws and to learn from her mistakes without affecting our (her parents) good standing or pocketbook. The consequences proved very effective. It took a lot of lifeguarding hours (this provided some time to contemplate on what she might have done differently) to pay the fines but the fines were for violations that would not doom her driving record. We thought that her experiences had perhaps helped our son, who now at 18 still had a squeaky clean record. Though it probably helped out some, we realized that he was not without error when we received a very surprising notice recently in the mail that “his court date had been set”. After speaking with him, he informed us that as an 18 year old legal adult he had retained his own lawyer (several months before this) and they had worked everything out and he was to be taking his classes that weekend to help erase the incident from his record. I will have to admit that I was very impressed, enough so that I didn’t even question his not telling us. Of course, he had called our friend Bill Powers who had been an amazing mentor to him during this time. We are extremely grateful to Bill for providing this confidential outlet for our son to obtain ethical and responsible legal advice. There are lawyers that will help you get around the long arm of the law or will even help you benefit from an unfortunate situation. I can say that Bill Powers is NOT one of these guys. He is a man full of integrity and compassion and a thorough understanding of and respect for the law. He has helped our young adults understand the law and its implications and has provided honest and straight forward answers and helped to turn the mistakes that they have made into learning experiences with consequences that will not hinder their chances for success in the future. Let’s face it, the laws today are very strict and the consequences of breaking them can be overwhelming. And sometimes, our many (many!) words of warning as parents just fall on deaf ears. If you have a son or daughter who has recently turned 18 and/or is headed off to college WRITE THIS MAN’S NAME AND PHONE NUMBER DOWN AND GIVE IT TO THEM! Better yet, call Bill yourself and schedule an appointment for your new drivers and new adults to sit down with him and have a nice chat about your state’s laws, their new responsibilities and the impact that bad decisions could possibly have on their future and yours.

I highly recommend you use Bill Powers! He is the BEST! I was unfortunately faced with a DWI and a speeding ticket a few months ago. I was a mess and did not know who to turn to for help. Bill and the entire staff at Powers McCartan were professional, responsive and compassionate. As great of an attorney as Bill is, he is an even better person.
