I sought the legal services of attorney H. Van Smith approximately six months ago when I separated from my estranged husband. Van not only represented me in my child custody hearing; he also provided his services in a tangled web of protective order, child custody, child support, and divorce proceedings. I knew Van would be someone I could trust at/after our first meeting/consultation. While matters such as divorce and custody can be extremely stressful and sometimes cause one to lose sight of the issues at hand, Van has demonstrated that he does not and will not lose sight of what's in the best interests of his clients. His court room demeanor is knowledgable, attentive, direct, and probably best described as having the beautiful strength and effectiveness of a quiet storm. SmithStrong is also equipped with a WONDERFUL staff (Donna, Brittany, Abigail, and Stephanie)! EVERYONE is aware of your case and offers gentle guidance through the legal process. They keep their clients regularly informed of the status of their cases which proved to be especially helpful/appealing to me. Some people believe that when they seek legal services, they are retaining a lawyer. In my case (and I'm sure in the cases of Van's other clients), I gained a knowledgable TEAM of true friends, a wonderful support system, and an extended family who cares more about the interests of their clients and clients' children than lining their own pockets. Not choosing Van to represent me would have been a disservice to myself, and I'll never go with anyone else from this point forward.

After searching online and discovering Van's website, I knew he was the man for the job. Once you meet Van you will realize he is very personable and loves his profession. Van has a great heart and is knowledgeable in what he loves.
I was nervous and he walked me through the process and at the same time made the experience a pleasant one. I highly recommend Van for any big decisions you need dealing with a lawyer. On his side he has experience, commitment, and effective communication. He was always positive with his reassurance.
Van's staff was very friendly and very accommodating. They all are really good people who make up a great team to have on your side.
"Good has two meanings- it means that which is good absolutely and that which is good for somebody."
Van is both :)

I met Attorney Van Smith approximately two weeks ago and requested his legal services in a divorce/child custody battle. I was in the condition of a woman who had just been thrown out of her house of 7 years with two daughters of the ages 3 and 4. After leaving that first initial meeting with Mr. Van Smith, I knew right away that I had just met a group of people who were going to help me through the next few days/weeks of unknown territory. Within the short span of 2 weeks Mr. Van Smith and his staff members became like my family. They knew my children by name and asked about their well-being every day. They kept communication with me and informed me of all the steps that would take place in the next few days. Specifically, Mr. Van Smith’s assistant Stephany returned my phone calls as late as 11:30pm and as early as 8 am in the morning. She has become like a friend and we share stories of our children, all while dealing with my case. I truly feel that I am there priority and that they are truly concerned with providing my children and me with the outcome that best suits me and not their own interest. Recently, I was in court with Mr. Van Smith and observed him successfully win a 1 year protective order suit that I thought was impossible to receive. In fact, the opposing lawyer came to me and praised my lawyer Van Smith on his ability to collaborate with all members of the court and work out a deal that was in the best interest of my family. I was surprised to receive such praise from my husband’s lawyer, as he is charging my husband double the price that Mr. Van Smith is charging me. After my court experience with Mr. Van Smith I am confident that I have the best advocate for my daughters and me on my side. I would honestly recommend the Law offices of Smith Strong, PLC to anyone who is in need of legal counseling.

I first reached out to Van Smith a day after being served a notice for spousal support for 70% of my income. Scarred and worried, I found Mr. Smith on the internet and was encouraged by his specialization in divorce. He met with me outside of regular hours and while on vacation (over the holidays) making a special trip to Williamsburg just to meet with me. His office was very upfront with the purpose of the initial visit and cost (a one hour consultation) with no obligation. Mr. Smith called me himself to provide directions and confirm. After the hour, I hired him on the spot.
Since I have been working with him, I have received invoices at the agreed upon schedule. I go over them with a fine tooth comb and have not found any discrepancies yet. His staff has been upfront and honest and allowed me to complete work on my own to cut cost. His paralegal provides most of the information gathering for discovery, which is good because she is cheaper.
Mr. Smith makes it clear that he meets with his entire team every week to go over the case and make sure everything is on track. After this meeting, I often get calls for clarification and other information. It is helpful to know that at least once a week, everyone is on the same page. He provided me with his direct contact info and has answered every question the day of being asked. His staff is very responsive as well and I have never had to leave a message.
I have been to court once with Mr. Smith. It was clear that his experience has taught him very effective strategy. He was anticipating the opposing attorney's underhanded move to obtain temporary support without a formal hearing. He was able to squash this, and demonstrated that he expected this all along. My first hearing was a clear victory. After the hearing, he sat down with me one on one in the courthouse to move on to the next step.
I will say that he is personally involved in my very complicated case and has made an effort to understand all the intricate details. I have not had any abnormalities in my invoices, and I've looked. I work a lot with the paralegal, but just on information gathering. Strategy and court appearances have all been handled by Mr. Smith himself. At this point, I have no regrets in hiring him and would repeat in a heartbeat. My only regret is not hiring him sooner.

I worked with a lot of lawyer in my daily business as real estate developer and am very familiar with the legal profession. I used Van to create a proactive prenuptial agreement and was very impressed with his knowledge of the law and his ability to think strategically about issues. I feel that i got a responsive lawyer who helped me understand the context and make a strategic decision to protect myself proactively against any future issues. What else does one need from a lawyer?

In my situation I needed an Attorney that would give me the facts and not overstate results. From day one, Van told me what to expect and what to prepare for. His expertise proved to be dead on accurate. I believe all lawyers try to do what is right for their clients but Van actually does it. His staff proved to be great communicators and I was always informed about where we were in the process and what the next steps were. This is rare customer service these days. If you need an Family law attorney and you want the best (not the most expensive) then contact Van's office. You won't be disappointed.

I found Van after dealing with another lawyer who sat on my case for over 6 months without doing anything and refused to return my calls. I fired that lawyer and contacted Van based on his positive reviews on this website. From the start Van and his team handled my case with thorough efficiency and communicated with me every step of the way. His legal guidance was "spot on" and it was clear that he truly had my best interests at heart. I can't say enough nice things about him and his team. Thanks for everything!
