Significant overbilling in a simple uncontested divorce (2009)

I hired Teresa S. Cole and Virginia C. Haizlip at Maddox, Cole & Miller, P.C. in 2009 for a straightforward, uncontested divorce with no custody or property disputes. I was billed approximately $25,000. I never received a clear, itemized explanation justifying fees of this magnitude for a case of ...this simplicity. Despite requesting clarity on how costs were accruing, communication remained limited and lacked transparency. As a client without legal experience, I expected straightforward guidance on billing and process, but felt insufficiently informed throughout the engagement. I also experienced interactions that I considered unprofessional and outside appropriate attorney-client boundaries. I cannot recommend these lawyers based on concerns regarding billing transparency, communication, and overall client treatment.

Very poor representation

All she cares is about how much she can charge you. The worst lawyer you can ever meet

I am sorry that this client felt dissatisfied with my services. I provide all my clients straightforward information about fees before accepting their case and detailed monthly statements. I communicate regularly with my clients, provide updates about their case, provide legal guidance and give high-quality representation. Any client who has a question about a charge on their bill is able to ask me for more information or an adjustment.

Unprofessional and unqualified

She was very unprofessional and couldn’t defend my case. She had half page questions for my opponent and nothing on how to defend my case. Her main focus was on the bills and how she can charge the maximum

think twice before you hire her

I hired her for my divorce case several years ago. She was a bit impatient and sometimes absent-minded so I had to educate myself and reminded her (some key facts got wrong several times). I am sure she is a capable lawyer, but just needs to provide more personalized service. The billing part was qui...te surprising too since it was always bills from her para-legal and whole team for very simple things. We settled outside courtroom through last minute negotiation on child support which I knew my ex did not spend lots of money on. In the end, she just gave me a number and negotiated with the other lawyer instead of giving me options and asking for facts from my ex. She should have given me advice that best protects my interests. Now several years have passed, and when I am asking advice on modification of child support from a different lawyer, I was advised that child support number is hard to modify and should be based on expenses in the first place. It would be hard to justify the modification if nothing changed (in my case change is my child reached a certain age, and childcare need would be minimized). Anyway, I just don't feel she represents me in a way that best protects my interests; at least i was not given the right options when negotiating with my ex. Money not well spent.

Terrible family lawyer

I hired Virginia Haizlip for a custody case. I had been to court on this case several years ago and had to return because of abuse of power by the custodian, medical neglect of the children and severe abuse. Ms. Haizlip continued to send letters and charge me to the custodian to settle the case, s...he told me that she had to do this that it was required by the courts, she urged me to go to a Wednesday motion for temporary custody that cost me a lot of money and the judge would not hear the case since she was not the judge who heard the case in the past, she then failed to obtain the evidence by subpoena of medical records and complete school records, I reminded her more than 10 times in writing and she ignored me, she threatened to withdraw from my case two weeks before I was going to court after she made me wait eight months to go before a judge who had heard the case 5 years ago instead of fighting to get me an early court date, she failed to present my case and she failed to bring up very key factors in the case to the judge, she asked me to fire her two days before my trial, however when I asked her if she would be refunding my money she said no! did not offer me any of mback and , ms. Haizlip failed to present my case and she failed to bring up very key factors imperative to my case. She was unprepared and had not done any work on my case. She used poor judgment and destroyed my case. I have hired 10 lawyers previously to deal with this Custody case and Virginia Haizlip was my 11th lawyer she was by far the most inexperienced, inept, rude and heartless lawyer I have ever experienced.
