McAlexander v. Sitaris

Practice Area: Medical malpractice

Outcome: Plaintiff's verdict for $4,000,000.00

Description: Young woman with history of low back degenerative disc disease presented to neurosurgeon with new complaints of worsening pain, difficulty walking and inability to urinate. These complaints were suggestive of "cauda equina syndrome" and mandated emergency surgical intervention. Due to a delay in decompression of the spinal cord, the young woman developed permanent neurologic injury. Though the verdict was $4,000,000.00, it was reduced on post trial motions due to Maryland's cap on non economic damages.
