I am a licensed attorney with more than a decade of experience in the private practice of law in Washington, DC. I focus my practice on civil litigation. The majority of my cases are for plaintiffs.
Over the course of my career, I have represented clients in a wide range of matters, including matters arising from personal injury, professional malpractice, breach of fiduciary duty, breach of contract, and unfair business practices. I have also represented clients in matters arising from alleged violations of administrative, environmental, and municipal laws.
I have particularly extensive experience representing individuals seeking justice for physical, emotional, and economic injuries inflicted by the negligent or intentional acts of others, and have helped such individuals obtain millions of dollars in compensatory damages and other relief. By way of example, one of my clients obtained a settlement of approximately $1.5 million for the death of a jail inmate caused by a deprivation of medical care, and another was awarded $5 million in punitive damages for the death of a U.S. soldier caused by an act of state-sponsored terrorism.
I have extensive knowledge about civil litigation, as demonstrated not only by the cases I have worked on but also my legal writing. I have authored numerous articles for my blog, currently known as D.C. Law Blog, as well as articles published in academic journals. I am also the author of Tort Claims and Defenses in the District of Columbia, which is a handbook for lawyers who need detailed technical information about the laws of the District of Columbia applicable to civil claims for assault, battery, false imprisonment / false arrest, conversion, trespass to chattel, trespass to realty, negligence (including employer negligence, legal malpractice, medical malpractice, motor vehicle negligence, premises liability, and other cases), strict liability for defective products, defamation (libel and slander), injurious falsehood, invasion of privacy, fraudulent misrepresentation, negligent misrepresentation, malicious prosecution, abuse of process, spoliation of evidence, loss of consortium, and other torts as well as a wide range of defenses.
I earned my law degree, with high honors, from The George Washington University Law School where I served as a member and editor of The George Washington Law Review. Prior to attending law school, I earned a bachelor of science degree from Syracuse University, and a master of science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
I am a member of the District of Columbia Bar and, as such, am authorized to represent individuals and entities in proceedings before the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, and agencies of the District of Columbia such as the District of Columbia Office of Administrative Hearings. I am also authorized to represent individuals and entities in various federal courts, including the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. I have also been admitted pro hac vice to litigate individual cases in courts throughout the country.
I am proficient in Spanish and have lived in Guatemala and Peru. I currently reside in the District of Columbia with my wonderful wife and children.
