DOUGLAS E. ROBERTS is a senior associate in the Government Enforcement, Compliance, and White Collar Litigation and Qui Tam Practice Groups in the Philadelphia Office of Pietragallo Gordon Alfano Bosick & Raspanti, LLP. Mr. Roberts has tried numerous criminal and civil cases to verdict in federal and state court.
Mr. Roberts serves as a CJA Panel Attorney in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Chester County Bar Association and the Philadelphia Bar Association. Mr. Roberts is also a member of the Federal Bar Association, Criminal Law Committee of the Philadelphia Chapter.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Roberts worked for the Federal Defenders of Western North Carolina. He served as the lead counsel in both bench and jury trials, litigated successful suppression motions, and negotiated the dismissal of felony charges. For his clients who were sentenced, Mr. Roberts achieved downward variances and departures from the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines at a rate and to a degree far greater than district norms. Mr. Roberts also handled numerous appeals and served as the office's liaison with the Clemency Project, a role which enabled him to assist in drafting defendants' petitions for sentence reductions to the U.S. Pardon Attorney.
Before working at the Federal Defenders' office, Mr. Roberts was in private practice with a large law firm, where he litigated commercial and criminal cases. Through representing individuals and business entities in a wide variety of matters, he gained exposure to all stages of criminal and civil litigation. In private practice, he also tried cases before juries and judges, argued before appellate courts, engaged in extensive motions practice, negotiated favorable resolutions, and managed large discovery projects.
Mr. Roberts earned his J.D. from Vanderbilt Law School, where he served as the Editor-In-Chief of the Vanderbilt Law Review. He was selected for Order of the Coif, and he was a member of the Moot Court Board and a Teaching Assistant in the Legal Writing & Research program. Mr. Roberts received his M.A. in Creative Writing from Boston University, and his B.A. in English from the University of Pennsylvania.
After law school, Mr. Roberts clerked for the Honorable Kent A. Jordan, United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
