I pay rent month to month. I do not owe the landlord any money. We have had a noise complaint recently from the insurance agency below us. No police were involved.
As a month-to-month tenant, your landlord likely does not need a reason to terminate your tenancy. Your landlord would have to give you a full calendar month's notice, however (e.g. you receive a notice on 1/27, you would have until the end of February to vacate).
Perhaps there is a Legal Aid or similar organization in your area that can more specifically advise you, since you cannot afford an attorney.See question
