I recently had the pleasure of utilizing the services of Mr. James Fishman and staff. My landlord, who has been trying to evict me for years, served papers on me right before my birthday and a vacation. I reached out to Mr. Fishman because I had a consultation with him months ago and he advised me as to what I should do in the event the papers came. OMG, Mr. Fishman and staff were right on top on things. They kept me up to date of the status of my impending case as things changed. This mean sometimes they reached out to me at least 3 or 4 times during the day. This constant communication reassured me that I had my fate in competent hands. Mr. Fishman not only educate me on some of the case studies he introduced to the landlord's lawyer but I think it's possible the lawyers received a little education too. My case was resolved without me even having to go to court. I could not thank him enough for his services. I hope I do not have to go through this again but if I do, I will definitely call Mr. Fishman again. I highly recommend him and his staff, you will not go wrong. As they say on other websites, "I was not paid to do this review"

I retained this attorney to initiate a commercial litigation suit against my landlord. After doing research on who would be the best attorney to help me I chose this attorney primarily based on his 10.0 rating on Avvo and 5 star reviews. However, I was very disappointed with the service I received and now find his reviews to be misleading. From the initial consultation, he was not punctual, having me wait 20 minutes. He did not return my phone calls and rarely responded to my emails. He assigned my case to 2 of his associates without disclosing that to me from the beginning. I waited a month just to get a consultation with him, explicitly to work directly with him, not his subordinates. His 2 associate attorneys failed to complete and file a summons and complaint with an injunction. After 3 months I had decided to move on because I felt I was being ignored and my case was being put on the back burner. The billing was outrageous, paying over $10,000 in retainers not to see the work completed, only hearing excuses. I also found many of the charges unwarranted, especially for phone calls where the basis of the conversations were inquiries on why there was such delay and urging them to get moving. This work was completed by another attorney I retained in 1 week's time and a 1/3 of the cost. Overall I was very displeased and felt both time and money were wasted. I do not recommend this attorney or his associates.

There is something remarkable and unique about Mr. James Fishman. For one thing, he handled my case in an intelligent, intensive and thorough manner. I was pleased with the outstanding quality and care of representation I received from him and his team. The tumultuous dealings with my landlord’s office for almost a year left me drained and emotionally distraught. I was very fortunate to have discovered Mr. Fishman at the time I did. I instantly felt a sense of relief when we met for a consultation. I felt a deep appreciation to someone that unequivocally understood the legal dilemma that I was experiencing. Upon detailing my case, he had many strategies to implement, made suggestions, and reassured me of my rights as a tenant with succession rights to a rent stabilized apartment.
If you need legal counsel in tenant/landlord area, I wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Fishman and his firm for any legal issues you may be facing with your landlord. I owe a debt of gratitude to him for his excellent service. He is kind, knowledgeable, professional, responsive, conscientious, attentive, sharp, ethical and fierce. I call him a lion. Because of James Fishman my case settled in my favor without litigation. I feel a sense of stability, fairness and restoration with the outcome of my case. I can now deal with my landlord with my head held high.
I thank you Mr. Fishman for an outstanding service. It was only God and his angels who guided me to you. He knew with you success is guaranteed. I am eternally grateful to you.

James Fishman came highly recommended to me by a friend who had a wonderful, successful experience with him in a case against the same landlord (who was trying to rid the building of rent stabilized tenants).
Before meeting with him, I was extremely stressed and did not think I (the little guy) would be able to fight this fight against the landlord (the big guy) after I received a notice advising me that the lease for my rent stabilized apartment would not be renewed. Within the first five minutes of meeting James, I knew I was in great hands. I could almost hear the Rocky theme song playing in my mind.
Having James Fishman in your corner is good on a multiple of levels. In addition to his knowledge and expertise (to name a few of his many amazing professional qualities), his respectable, outstanding reputation speaks volumes. Suffice it to say he is known for being so amazing at doing what he does – the other side’s attorney will more than likely know who he is and that you have muscle on your side.
I will not go into the details of the case, but I will say that everyone in his office was top notch – especially Reuben Fuller-Bennett. They both kept me informed every step of the way. They determined which supporting documentation I needed to obtain, and they worked with me to figure out next steps as to how to obtain it. Once it was all gathered, they sent a letter with hundreds of pages of the supporting documents. We did not receive a response for weeks, but I was assured by James and Reuben that this was just the easiest first step and not to worry.
Sure enough – a few weeks later I received an email from James with the words “Good News” in the subject line. The landlord would be sending me a renewal lease. Thankfully we did not have to go to trial, but I know if we had that it would have been successful because of James and his team.
Suffice it to say that James Fishman came highly recommended to me, and I now know why from my own firsthand experience. I will highly recommend him to those I know, and I highly recommend him to all reading this.

James Fishman is an outstanding attorney: his strong intellect, his in-depth knowledge of the law, his impressive lawyering skills, make him one of the most skilled attorneys in his field (New York City Tenant law)
During my first (and only ) consultation with him, I very quickly became aware of his astute mind and his in depth knowledge of the relevant law. I had clearly found a professional who set high standards of excellence for himself, and who would negotiate vigorously on my behalf (I was highly anxious about a rent stabilization situation, and here he was, a rock....)
Having explained the issue to me, he crafted and electronically sent key letters while we were in consultation, thus beginning the negotiation immediately. The letters were incisive, demanding and, (quite surprisingly to me), civil, even given....
Aside from extreme relief, I was highly impressed.
Having set this tone, Mr Fishman maintained this high level of professionalism, regardless of the obstructionism, delays, and antics of opposing counsel.
He is also a fine person: caring, reliable, and un - greedy. He leaves his client with no doubt that he will fight to succeed on her behalf (also be a formidable foe, intimidating if necessary.....).
I cannot recommend him strongly enough, and feel incredibly lucky to have found him.
It goes without saying that my case was settled to my satisfaction.

Mr. Fishman was, at first, retained for his assistance and expertise in dealing with our new landlord's/mgmt. company's (which I cannot get into specifically due to legal reasons, but in one short word) antics. I was trying to "save" my home, a rent stabilized apt. in Manhattan, which I've been residing in for 20 years, but when my living situation got so dire that it was no longer sane nor was it healthy to stay and fight anymore, Mr. Fishman helped me reached a settlement (on a contingency fee) with the landlord, and what Mr. Fishman got on my behalf was beyond my expectation and I was really happy with the result!
He is first and foremost, very fair and conscientious regarding the usage of the retainer fee. Everything he did was NECESSARY, unlike stories I've heard about lawyers charging their clients an arm and a leg but get minimal (or rather, non-satisfactory) result. He is a man of few words, but those words are golden. Mr. Fishman is also very trustworthy and in my humble opinion, you cannot put a price on trustworthiness. What impressed me the most was he actually cared enough to still reply to my questions and emails on his vacation, his personal, leisure vacation....
All in all, if you are looking for a knowledgable, conscionable and decisive attorney who doesn't waste your money or time like water down the drain, then look no further, James Fishman is your MAN! Thank you very much, James, for helping me and my family and for everything that you've done and achieved. All lawyers should be like you and definitely can learn something from you!

I had a consultation with James Fishman who found a solution to my non-payment of rent case almost instantly after several lawyers had told me I was hopeless and turned me away. He negotiated with my landlord's attorney and got an even better deal than I had hoped for- everything I wanted and more! I recommend him strongly to anyone, he was very quick to find several strong responses and brought an immaculate defense for my case.
Thank you Jamie!

I hired James Fishman as he came highly recommended by another lawyer. I am grateful that I listened to the recommendation as James has been my lawyer now since 2008. My landlord is one of those that believes in harassing his tenants who live in rent stabilized apartments and his harassments included filing frivolous court papers which had not a single bearing of truth. My landlord thought that they could frighten me into leaving but I decided to fight and James fought alongside with me. James was honest, forthright, efficient, and was able to cut down the landlord’s lawyer in court so easily. My last court case which started in 2007 and ended in 2010. The reason why it even ended was a testament to James’ efficiency and most important of all his amazing attention to details. We won the case on a technicality that the landlord did not serve me papers in the appropriate time frame that the court deems necessary. They actually served me the papers 45 mins earlier than the required full 5 days. Only someone with James’ eagle eyes could have caught out something like this and so the entire case was dismissed because of 45 minutes. And so when the landlord decided it was time to harassment me again in 2014, there was never any doubt in my mind who I needed on my side of the corner to win yet another battle for me against my landlord. And this time, tired of the landlord’s relentless pursuit to get me out despite being a model tenant, I requested James to negotiate a buyout. And by September 2015, James was able to get a written agreement and we secured a successful buyout. I would not hesitate in the least bit to hire James anytime.

Mr. Fishman was recommended by a friend of a family member and my consultation with him regarding a landlord tenant court settlement agreement was thorough and professional. It provided me with the best advice as to how to proceed within the context of the agreement. I highly recommend him based on his professionalism and clear assessment of my situation. I would not hesitate to hire him.
