About me

I have 31 years of experience handling all types of criminal matters- 23 years as a defense attorney and the rest, from 1987 through 1994, as an Assistant D.A. and then as the Deputy D.A. in Portland, Maine.  If you think it's an advantage to understand your opponent in battle--and believe me, if you are charged with a crime you might feel as if you are in a battle--  I understand your opponent because I've been there.   You need someone who can find the flaws in the State's case and press them to your advantage; someone who knows how to present your redeeming qualities and the difficulty of your circumstances to bleed off some of the State's enthusiasm for harsh punishment; someone who can get you through this very unpleasant process with as little damage as possible.  That's what I can offer you.   So, if you are charged with a crime, give me a call.

And if you think you can't afford an attorney, but really don't want court appointed counsel either, give me a call.   I'd be happy to meet with you and discuss the matter, and you might find that you can afford to hire your own attorney after all.

In September of 2011, I published Maine OUI Law as a legal reference guide to assist other Maine attorneys.  The 2014 edition was published in December of 2013, and the 2016 edition was released in November of 2015. The book collects references to controlling statutes, case law and agency rules that govern OUI practice in Maine. Maine OUI Law is available from (in hard copy) and from its publisher, (in hard cover and PDF).

Maine OUI Law has proven to be a useful tool for the practicing attorney.

"In this slim and elegant book, Ed lays out the statutory authority and cases related to every aspect of defending an OUI case...I can't imagine how anyone would consider handling OUI cases in Maine without it...So buy this book."

Woody Hanstein, Esq., Farmington, Maine.

"Ed Folsom's book is the single best source for Maine case and statutory law relating to OUI defense that I have come across. Whether you are defending your 1st or 1001st case, you will find Ed's book a valuable aid. I carry it in my briefcase."

Scott Gardner, Esq., Biddeford, Maine.

In December of 2012, my second book, Maine Driver's License Suspensions, Revocations and Related Offenses (non-OUI), was published.   In November of 2015, the 2016 edition was released.  The book is another reference guide for practicing attorneys navigating the complex interactions between the courts and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, as those interactions bear on a person's right to operate motor vehicles in Maine.  The book also deals with trial proof issues and related constitutional-law cases that are important to those facing a charge of operating after suspension or operating after habitual offender revocation.   It is available from ($30.00) and from

During the spring semesters of  2014 and 2015, I taught Criminal Procedure- Investigations, as an adjunct professor at the University of Maine School of Law.  I will teach the same course at UMaine Law in the spring semester, 2016.
