Overview

Also known as skin cancer, rodent ulcer, basal cell skin cancer.

Basal cell carcinoma is classified as a nonmelanoma skin cancer, and it is the most common skin cancer in the United States. It used to be most common in men over aged 40, but is now regularly diagnosed in younger men and women.

Basal cell skin cancer starts in the top layer of skin, grows very slowly and rarely spreads to other parts of your body. It is highly curable but also very likely to grow back within five years. Anyone who has ever had basal cell carcinoma should get regular skin exams.
