The amount a non-custodial parent must pay in child support is based on strict state regulations. Although a judge calculates the amount to be paid, he has very little leeway in terms of adjusting it. The calculation is based on the combined net incomes of both parents, the cost of childcare, medical insurance, and amount of visitation.
