Overview

Also known as human papillomavirus.

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD). HPV infects both males and females, typically in the genital area. However, it can also infect the mouth and throat. Most people infected with HPV develop no symptoms and usually have no idea they have contracted it.

Nearly 20 million Americans are infected with HPV. Each year, six million more people will become infected and at least 50% of sexually active people will contract HPV during their lifetime.
