Domestic violence is a sentence given by a judge when an act or threatened act of violence has occurred between partners in an intimate relationship. It may include attempts to intimidate, control, coerce, or punish as well. In domestic violence cases, the DA must prove that the couple in question is in an intimate relationship, but they do not have to be married to qualify.
