Parental consents to adoption are irrevocable upon signing for children under 6 months of age unless there is fraud or duress. For children over 6 months of age, a parent has 3 business days to revoke the consent for any reason. After 3 business days the parent must show fraud or duress.

When a child is placed for adoption across state lines with adoptive parents that are not close relatives the Interstate Compact for the Placement of Children ( ICPC) is implicated. Failure to comply with ICPC requirements may negatively impact the adoption.
