libel/ slander/ defamation compensation

I wanted to know if I needed a lawyer to find out how much I should be compensated for slander/libel/or defamation? I had a minor verbal altercation in the parking lot with a security guard at a well-known hardware store. After our 3-5 min spat I departed into the store, to find myself 30 minutes later being frisked in the store by two policemen. They were told by the security guard I was going for a gun or weapon in my glove compartment during my spat in the parking lot, which was totally false. The security guard was contracted thru the hardware store to keep the minority workers from soliciting their work to the customers. He must have assumed I was one due to my skin tone. My car of course was also searched, even with me repeatedly telling them my place in the community as a Pastor/ Chaplain Director and Community Worker thru a known Christian Organization. I then realized that the security guard never spoke to the manager about this situation, prior to calling the police. And the police are also suppose to speak with the manager as well letting them know they are coming onto the premises, and that didn't happen. While I was being frisked in front of store employees, there were also other customers I knew who also seen this happening to me. They didn't understand why this was happening. I go to that store often and felt very humilated and demoralized. Before I left the store, I went to speak to the manager and told him what had just happened and he knew nothing about it. He even mentioned that it might have been racial profiling due to the reason I stated above about the minority workers. Thats when I got all the employee's information. I just sent out a letter to the Regional Vice President and he wants to know how he can fix this. So in the mean time I need to know my next step. I feel I should be compensated, although nothing will fix the situation that now has been done, but what would be an decent amount in this case? And do I need a lawyer to negotiate the amount?

Personal Injury - skating rink

A friend was skating around the outside of the skating rink and another skater (a stranger) crashed into her with a lot of force and caused substantial damage to her leg. She has no medical insurance. Does the skating rink typically have insurance for these types of injuries on the property? Also, does the business have any duty to take a report with the details of the incident and the stranger's name and contact info (since she was too out of commission to get this info on her own)? She is not getting any help from the manager at the skating rink. Many thanks for any advice you can provide.

in car accident, lawsuit against me

I was in a car accident on June 22nd of 2007. I rear-ended the car in front of him which happened to have been a neighbor that lived right down the street from us. I received a letter in the mail on May 22nd of this year from my insurance company stating that they were handling a claim presented against me for damages that happened in the accident. It basically stated that it lawsuit might have been filed against me. On on October 22nd I was served papers for a lawsuit against me. The insurance company was contacted via telephone. I had spoken to an agent and the agent stated that a lawyer would be in contact with me. To make a story short the lawsuit stated that the plaintiff and the passenger which happened to be his wife suffered injuries to the hea, neck, shoulders and back. It also said that it would effect their life activities and enjoyments. I don't understand that because I see them just about everyday and they look fine. The lawsuit also stated that I was speeding, but in the police report the officer stated that I wasn't. I applied my brakes when coming to a stop, but since it was raining my car slid and rear-eneded them. Any way is there any advice as to what I should do.

slander at work/internet post

i am a high school teacher that was threatened/slander by a student. He took a picture of me during class and sent a pix message stating that "If you think Mrs. **** is the bitchest teacher in the school and want to see her buring in a ditch please forward this to 10 people. She is also a lesbian."
The student then proceeded to post the same message on his facebook page.

The school has taken the action of suspending the student for 5 days. In cases like this there is usually a superintendent's hearing as well. They are not planning on having a hearing, have not explained why?

I was wondering what if any legal action can be taken either against the school district or the student for this.

Car wash broke the door handle of my car

I took my car to a carwash. When they finished washing it, one of the workers told me that one of the door handles of the car broke. The whole handle came off. They told me that they were not resposible because here in Florida the car handles break all the time because of the heat. I was able to get the manager write on the back of his business card that they handle broke while they were washing the car. He insisted that the car wash couldn't be responsible. I have the note that he wrote, the broken handle, picture of the car door, and I paid with my credit card so I have the transation shows in my statement. Is it true that they are not responsible? What can I do?

wrongful death

My girlfriend and I are amid an argument regarding the legal ramifications of the following situation which recently occurred in our city: A dementia suffering elderly woman left her quarters at a local hospital, ascended a nearby fire escape and was found dead on the roof of the building over 24 hours later. My girlfriend argues that a wrongful death lawsuit is imminent against the hospital because of negligent care/observation by staffers. I argue that even if the deceased's family chooses to file suit, there would be issues of standing, whereas the hospital is a conglomerate in the city with no competing health facilities, surely forcing patients to sign tort waivers- therefore limiting damages. On top of this, I argue that "dementia" is a subjective and rolling diagnosis. Dementia cannot be limited in its definition, therefore wrongful action cannot be pinned on the definition used by modern doctors, as future symptons of dementia surely "could" exist. This argument should certainly hinder any ability to collect as the treatment and standard of care for this disease are ever changing, and with events such as the one at hand, can better help to understand and care for patients, but cannot be litigated for unpredictable actions. This case does not personally affect either of us, it is more a matter of intelligence. Thank you.

What is the process of getting damages incurred after bitting down on a bone piece in hamburger purchased at the grocery store

I recently bought some hamburger from a local grocerey store. While eating a hamburger that evening I bit down hard on a big piece of bone. This has actually resulted in severe injury to my jaw. FRACTURED! My question is: what is the best way to go about pursuing some compensation for the medical expenses from the store? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks! -T.J.
