Legal NewsTenant Served a $50,000 Defamation Lawsuit for TweetWednesday, July 29, 2009 at 02:04 PM A Chicago management group has reportedly sued one of their tenants for defamation after she allegedly posted a message online about the conditions in her apartment building.
Amanda Bonnen reportedly "tweeted" a 140-character message on the micro-social networking site Twitter in May that read, "Who said sleeping in a moldy apartment was bad for you? Horizon realty thinks it's okay." Horizon Group Management has now taken action against the internet user and is allegedly suing Bonnen in a $50,000 defamation suit. The organization, which claims to manage approximately 1,500 apartments in the Chicago area, said it was "maliciously and wrongfully" defamed by the defendant's tweet from her "abonnen" account. Jeffrey Michael, whose family has run Horizon for more than 25 years, told the Chicago Sun-Times that the tweet was "obviously false." He also confirmed that Bonnen recently moved out and that the company didn't have a conversation with her about the tweet. "We're a sue first, ask questions later kind of an organization," Michael told the news provider. As of this writing, the twitter account abonnen does not appear to exist. Other users on the site have speculated that Twitter disabled the account. ![]() |
