Legal NewsMan calls police to report stolen pot; charged with DUIFriday, November 6, 2009 at 02:22 PM Man calls police to report stolen pot; charged with DUI
An Oregon man was charged with DUI after he called 911 and had a conversation with the dispatcher concerning the whereabouts of his marijuana. Calvin Hoover, a 21-year-old from Salem, allegedly told police dispatchers early Tuesday morning that someone had broken into his truck and stolen cash, a jacket and a small amount of marijuana while he was in a bar in his hometown, the Associated Press reports. The man called 911 a second time to complain that deputies had not arrived. However, the dispatcher reportedly had trouble understanding Hoover, because he was allegedly driving, and had to stop several times to vomit. Upon arriving on the scene responding police officers found Hoover about 100 feet from his vehicle. They first recorded the theft of his clothing, money and pot and explained that by telling the officers of his possession of marijuana, he could face criminal charges. Hoover was then charged with DUI. Though medical marijuana is legal in Oregon, where about 21,000 people have legalized permits for its use, it was not clear if Hoover retained such permission. Research by Mothers Against Drunk Driving estimates that one arrest for DUI is made for every 88 episodes of driving with a blood-alcohol concentration that is over the U.S. legal limit. ![]() |
