Lawsuit Cites Toyota's Negligence To Repair Faulty Gas Pedal

On Monday, the attorneys of a grieving father and husband filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the automaker Toyota, claiming that a faulty accelerator pedal caused their family member's death as she drove her 2009 Corolla.

Filed in the Harris County Civil Court in Texas, court documents show that the plaintiff, Michael Harris, alleges that Toyota knowingly ignored mechanical problems with the model, an oversight he believes caused his wife's death, ABC affiliate KTRK reports.

In December, Trina Harris was killed after her car allegedly sped through a stop sign and crashed into a concrete wall.

The 2009 Toyota Corolla model that the 34-year-old mother of two drove would later be recalled to fix a noted issue with the accelerators.

Houston car accident lawyer Kenneth Mingledorff told the news source, "You know they built a death trap. They are aware of it. They know it, they know it and they need to put a stop to it."

The lawsuit cites gross negligence on the part of Toyota and seeks $200 million in damages.

According to the Phillips National Injury Group, car accidents result in about 3 million injuries in the U.S. each year.
