Cab Driver Carrying Passengers Charged with DUI

Early Monday morning, police arrested and charged a Florida cab driver with a DUI as the man was transporting two customers.
Police say that they observed the taxi of Jose Mirelez, who lives in St. Petersburg, swerving and driving on the wrong side of the road on Treasure Island Causeway at about 3 a.m., the St. Petersburg Times reports.
The man was driving a United Taxi company cab, though another company delivered his passengers to their destination.
Upon approaching the cab, police say Mirelez smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and failed a field sobriety test. When the driver refused to take a breathalyzer test, the law enforcement officers brought him to the police station where, later, he refused to leave his holding cell.
Mirelez now faces a DUI charge and a charge for resisting an officer without violence. He was also arrested in 2003 and 2006 - both times for driving without a license.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the average alcohol-impaired driver arrested on the highway has a blood-alcohol concentration of .20 percent, which is over double the legal limit in most states. The BAC figure amounts to 14 beers in 4 hours for a 180-pound man.
